Fame & Fable is a great card game which some tableau building elements. You’re spending actions to buy new hero card and item cards and then later use actions to put them into play. You’re trying to use them to defeat monster cards for points. The twist is that you only have limited space for heroes and it’s a bit tricky to use them more than once or twice, so you’re typically replacing them with fresh new heroes. This keeps any one strategy from sticking, you keep setting up new combos which is fun.

Had a great time teaching Horrified to new players. The original is still a classic.

It’s October so we try to break out all the spooky themed games. Witchstone is a cool take on action selection with a bit of tile laying and a lot of point salad.

You have these hexagonal tiles with two different actions on them and on your turn you place one into your cauldron and then do both those actions. But if you connect your tile to groups of the same symbol the action is stronger.

There are a couple of tracks to move on, there is also some route building and then moving your pieces around a map to set up end game scoring. And a lot of what you do gives you bonus actions which can chain together and is very satisfying.

Guildlands is a really clever game of tile laying where everyone is building out the same city but each player represents a different guild and so you score in a different way than all the other players. You’re trying to arrange elements so you score but if you mess up other players too much then they may change things on you.

Tir na nOg is a great tableau building game with some drafting elements.

During the game you’re building three rows of cards. Each row scores differently based on score cards selected at the start of the game.

The way you draft cards is interesting. There is a grid of cards, laid out based on the number of players, and each round you go around in turn order placing your pieces touching two cards, then in reverse turn order you take back a piece and one of the two cards it’s touching. If one of your pieces gets stranded and has no cards under it then at the end of the round you can select any left over card - that way you always get three cards per round.

At the end of five rounds you score your rows and most points wins.

Never played Marvel Crisis Protocol but last meet up some brought a board game version called Alliances. This was the Night of the Goblin set and it was Spider-man themed.

You have four heroes trying to complete an objective. In this session I played Black Cat and our goal was to defeat minions to make them drop samples of the goblin serum and then we had to find matching samples and take them to the correct computer to create a cure.

The game seems pretty simple, each round the heroes get a turn and then the villains get a turn and then everyone gets a second turn. So each round you get to do two things and when it’s your go you can move or attack.

Attacks and defense use the same dice, so each die has symbols showing successes for different actions and it’s a little easier to attack then defend.

The thing I liked the most was the way you could help your team - any time you knocked out a minion you could give another hero a small boost like moving one space or healing one or gaining an energy point which might let them do a bigger attack when they go. That system was the highlight for me and took the game up a notch from too simple to a nice little cooperative puzzle.
