Raising a young king in America can be one of the most difficult things a Black father can do. But I’m incredibly proud of the Black fathers out here who, in the climate of today’s world, are truly showing up for their sons and making them a priority.

We still hear the stigma every now and then that Black men don’t take care of their children or that they’re deadbeat fathers. But I see a shift happening, especially here in the DMV.

There are so many examples of Black fatherhood, love, leadership, and excellence right here in our community. I want to give a special shoutout to Pastor Tyrone and my @vcmidc family for being an inspiration to me. I see this kind of fatherhood consistently within my church community, and it’s something worth celebrating.

Crash Out | September 27, 2023 | @blackmanitsokay exhibit piece

What’s a “crash out”? Someone who loses control, can’t manage their anger, or acts impulsively without thinking about the consequences.

Oftentimes, I feel like that term is always tied to the identity of a Black man. At times, I feel like we’ve even embraced it as a community to justify why we were “provoked” to crash out.

But I think we need to have more conversations about emotional control, accountability, and learning how to respond instead of react. Being angry doesn’t make you weak, and being provoked doesn’t mean you have to lose control.

I think it’s time to let the “crash out” label die down. by @chadvisionaire
