Paris friends: the @forumdesimages is currently doing a wide-ranging series on Los Angeles in film, and invited me to present a double feature on June 24 of two favorites: Floyd Mutrux's heroin docu-fiction DUSTY AND SWEETS MCGEE (1971) and a 35mm print of John Cassavetes's heavy romance MINNIE AND MOSKOWITZ (1971). Both of these came out the same year, feature a lot of real locations + street photography of the Westside, and Pink's Hot Dogs. (I'm also told that DUSTY has never screened in Paris before.) Honored to be part of this alongside many other programmers and filmmakers—hope to see you there. 🌭🌞 by @chafedelbows

An academic interlude…I wrote an article for @amiarchivists Moving Image Journal about piracy and media archives. I talk about Plex and K*ragarga and personal media collections as “alternative” forms of distribution, and their supposed impact on independent and artist's film distribution and preservation. In general I argue for a more nuanced understanding of "access" in the current landscape of streaming and corporate consolidation/precarity, when so many movies are still impossible to watch online legally.

I shared the introduction here but let me know if you want a PDF. I wrote this article nearly two years ago in grad school before it went through the slow grind of academic publishing. Many thanks to @desertedfilmsps for editing, for @ghopperfilm @KinoLorber @stephenbroomer @preservationinsanity for speaking to me, to @cloudypinky for convincing me to publish it, to @enrico_camporesi for paving the way and @dimension_tide for moral support. ❤️

I’m honored to bring @mezzaninefilm to the @gettymuseum on November 19 as part of programmer @sarahannecooper’s incredible ongoing interdisciplinary performance series Ever Present. We are co-presenting a free(!) 16mm screening of Laura Mulvey and Peter Wollen's CRYSTAL GAZING (1982) on Nov 19, starring Lora Logic of X-Ray Spex, which will be followed by a pre-recorded Q&A with Mulvey moderated by Amy Taubin. There will also be a zine with an original essay by @jennpelly given out at the screening.

This is a fascinating—and sadly relevant—movie about cultural production during a time of economic precarity in the UK. Aside from being unavailable on home video or streaming, it has probably not screened in LA in decades, if ever. I really hope you can make it.
