Is Egypt as chaotic as people say it is? Absolutely! But is it worth the trip? Hell yes!

Egypt is full of extraordinary history, beautiful people, and experiences you won’t find anywhere else. BUT you have to be aware of a few things in order to reduce the unnecessary stress you WILL encounter.
My biggest piece of advice is to be aware - not afraid. I never felt that I was unsafe or in a dangerous position but it can definitely be overwhelming.
A few things to consider before visiting:

1. Not everyone offering to help is doing it for free. Ask questions FIRST before accepting help, rides, photos, or services.

2. Negotiate prices BEFORE agreeing to anything. Know the TOTAL, not just the price per person. The price will most likely change a few times, so confirm the agreed upon price several times before proceeding.

3. Carry small Egyptian pound bills for tips, small purchases and transportation. You can use your credit card or Apple Pay in most places.

4. As a woman, be confident and aware of your surroundings at all times! The men are extremely aggressive and persistent. They will follow you so trust your instincts and never feel obligated to entertain unwanted attention.

5. Use trusted transportation and don’t underestimate the traffic or travel time between destinations. I used Uber most places (even when I was told I couldn’t) Also, jumping on the Uber motorcycle is my preferred method of travel for shorter distances.

6. Start your sightseeing early or you’ll be taken out by the heat! The sun in Egypt hits different 🥵

7. Check your restaurant bill. Most of the time the service charges are included but you can choose to leave an additional tip.

8. As a woman, ensure you are dressed modestly and it’s always a good idea to wear a scarf to cover your shoulders - especially when visiting religious sites.

Standing before something that has outlived empires, kings, and centuries of human history puts this life into perspective. The world is far bigger than the life we know, and there is so much more to experience than the life we’ve been taught to settle for. I’ve never wanted to simply exist in this world.
