Did you know the Catholic Church actually has two main rites, both leading back to Christ?

The first is the Latin Rite, known primarily through the Roman Catholic Church, the one most people recognize, centered in Rome and led by the Pope.

The second is the Eastern Rite, a family of ancient Churches that preserved their own sacred languages, liturgies, and traditions while remaining in full communion with Rome.

One of the oldest of these Eastern traditions is the Chaldean Catholic Church. Rooted in Mesopotamia, it is the continuation of the historic Church of the East, which began its reunification with Rome in the 1400s. For centuries, the Church was headquartered in Babylon, in the ancient cities of Seleucia, Ctesiphon, and Baghdad, the heart of Christian life in the East. Its leader was called the Patriarch of Babylon of the Chaldeans, until the title was recently changed to Patriarch of Baghdad of the Chaldeans just a few years ago.

The Chaldeans still pray in Aramaic, the language of Jesus Himself, and trace their spiritual lineage to Saint Thomas the Apostle.

The Chaldean Catholic Church stands as living proof that East and West, ancient and modern, all flow from one source, Christ Himself!

While Chaldeans are from the Middle East, did you know that they are not Arab? Chaldeans are their own ethnic group and speak their own language of Chaldean Aramaic. Chaldeans are also some of the most ancient Christians in the world. The history of the Chaldean people spans thousands of years to ancient Mesopotamia.

I’ve sung this hymn for Mother Mary at weddings my entire life, always dreaming of the moment I’d sing it at my own during the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. I truly couldn’t hold back my tears 🤍 🥲

Here are the two verses I sang, a prayer of thanksgiving and a blessing for our new home:

Verse 1: A Greeting to Mary (while presenting her with flowers)

English:
Peace be with you, full of grace, chosen from among all nations. You conceived by the Spirit of the Lord, and gave birth to the Son of the Most High. Blessed is your holy fruit, O Bride of the Holy Spirit.
Arabic:
السلام عليك يا ممتلئة نعمة، المختارة من بين كل الأمم. حبلتِ من روح الرب، وولدتِ ابن العلي. مباركة هي ثمرتكِ المقدسة، يا عروس الروح القدس.

Verse 2: A Prayer for the Bride & Groom

English:
Bless the bride and groom, that they may become a father and a mother. Spread tenderness in their home, and may their table always abound with bread. May no harm ever reach them, so they may thank you with all their heart and voice.
Arabic:
باركي العروس والعريس، لكي يُصبحا أباً وأمّاً. وانشري في بيتهما الحنان، ولتكن مائدتهما عامرة بالخبز والخير. ولا يمسّهما أي أذى، ليشكراكِ من صميم القلب والفم. taken in Holy Name Catholic Church by @chaldean
