I was nervous posting this and decided to leave the nerves in because I don’t want us to lose our humanity in the fight…

So um, ya girl woke up published! 👀💅🏽….AGAIN lol

I had the honor of sitting down with @boldjourneymag for an interview where I shared my heart, my work, and my belief in justice that doesn’t just sustain movements but sustains the people doing the fighting. From mental health to global human rights, this is my story, my calling, and my resilience.

The full interview is live now-link’s in my bio.

Civil Rights Activist Angela Y Davis. Still the BEST day of my life! When I tell you the respect that I have for this woman! Growing up my family did a very good job (especially my stepfather) of making sure I knew our history. So when I advocate for people and when you hear me quick to stand up for the marginalized, the ones who STILL feel like they can’t use their voice, the ones who STILL move in fear, the underdogs, the overlooked, the underestimated, it’s people like Angela Davis, Malcolm X, Fred Hampton, Medgar Evers and so many more that moved in purpose, boldness, imperfections but stood up anyways that I look to. To the ones that came before us and gave us a voice, opened up doors, made our paths a little easier. May we always honor, never forget and may we open doors for our next!

The past few weeks have been some tough ones. Truthfully, the past few months have required me to pull myself out of more than a few mental holes.

There have been days lately when I’ve realized I’m fighting not just for the community around me or the world around me, but quite literally for my own mind. Fighting to stay hopeful. Fighting to remember who I am. Fighting not to let one hard season convince me that my whole life is hard.

And yesterday, I needed to put the fight down for a little while.

I got in the water. I let the waves hit me. I laughed. I took pictures. I felt the sun on my skin. I let myself be beautiful without needing to be productive, useful, strong, or responsible for anybody else. I gave myself permission to just be a woman at the beach having a really good day.

And somewhere between the waves and the laughter, I remembered something: joy doesn’t require everything in your life to be resolved first.

Sometimes taking care of yourself looks like therapy and prayer and doing the hard internal work. And sometimes it looks like putting on the swimsuit, getting in the water, and remembering that your life is still happening while you figure the rest of it out.

I’m still figuring some things out. I’m still fighting some battles. But I’m learning not to postpone joy until life makes sense.

Yesterday, I chose joy. And baby… joy looks GOOD on me. 🌊🤎
