Creative Clarity isn’t about me telling somebody what to do.

It’s about creating enough space for them to hear what they already know - and notice what has more life in it than the rest.

60 minutes. Live online. One-to-one.

A short intake beforehand, a thoughtful conversation, and written reflections afterwards.

No programme to fit into. No prescribed outcome.

Sometimes clarity isn’t finding a new direction. Sometimes it’s recognising the one that has been there all along.

Who in your life has something in them that you can see - even when they can’t quite see it themselves?

An artist who has lost the thread. A writer carrying something unfinished. Someone between one creative chapter and the next.

That is who I had in mind when I created the Christmas Creative Clarity Gift Session.

Not to hand them an answer. To give them enough space to hear their own.

Some inheritances carry love, knowledge or meaning. Others carry assumptions and injuries.

Care cannot mean preserving everything simply because it reached us.

But how do we decide what to protect, what to repair, what to change and what not to pass on?

I think the first responsibility may be to look closely enough to know what we are carrying.

I’ve realised something about my own creative practice.

I don’t make because I feel I should. I make when there’s something I’m trying to understand.

It can be a question, a person, a memory - sometimes it’s something that doesn’t quite make sense yet.

The enquiry feeds the work.
Then the work creates another question. And off I go again. Usually down a rabbit hole.

Perhaps that is what Studio Notes has been quietly showing me all along.

A phrase. A fear. A way of welcoming people. The feeling that some subjects should never be discussed. Even the way we think about ourselves.

None of these arrives with a label attached. We may simply assume it is part of who we are.

What changes when we recognise where something began?

This question may be more important than we realise...

My grandmother left me a recipe for Maids of Honour, small cakes she used to make. She never wrote it down. It passed from one mind to another, but it was inherited all the same.

And that made me wonder: what had I actually received?

The recipe?
The memory of my grandmother?
Or the feeling of being in her kitchen when the world felt magical?

That question became Studio Note 08. It travels through the visible and invisible things we inherit, the work left to us by people we never knew, and what an earlier version of us may not just leave behind, but teach us.

I drew this image of my daughter by hand.
Years later, I ran it through Adobe Illustrator’s Concept to Vector tool.

The line changed. My relationship with it didn’t.

It still feels as intensely personal to me as the day I drew it.

Which has left me wondering:

When does a tool change the authorship of a work?
And perhaps an even more difficult question...

From Leadership to Stewardship

We are a collaborative species. Very little of what any of us achieves begins entirely with us.

So perhaps the better question is not only what can I change? but what am I responsible for preserving - and what condition will I leave it in for whoever comes next?

The words can survive.
The image can survive.
The sound can survive.

But if the original disappears, has everything really been preserved?

That question began with rare books and followed me back into the studio, where an original drawing was sitting beside a new vector version of itself.

They carry the same image. But they do not carry the same history.

My latest Studio Note asks why originals still matter in a world increasingly able to reproduce the contents of almost anything.

Not because everything that follows is lesser.

Because perhaps the beginning holds something no later version can inherit.
