Lets stop acting like this is OK!

15th Oct 2026 and the 0deg isotherm (freezing level) in Chamonix is around 4300m! That would be considered hot in July/August, and its mid October!

The term 'heatwave' seams to have lost all meaning this year, what we are seeing is not a wave, it is a wall! We have faceplanted into a wall of inescapable heat, and its only going to get worse.

This is not normal, and its not OK.

Glaciers are beautiful things, its a shame that we might be the last generation to get to apreciate them...

This summer we have seen unprecedented rates of ice loss, with 4-10m of surface melt widespread accross the Alps in just a few months. Down at the snouts we have lost much more than that.

In 30 years time, most alpine ice will be gone, by the end of the century, ALL alpine ice will probably be gone...

Sad times.

Continuous limmited opening from the 12th Dec

Valley floor begginer areas

Please note, any openings before Dec 12th will be very limmited, and probably just at weekends. From Dec 12th, most lifts will operate in the stated areas if snow allows.

If this sight doesnt terrify you, then you are sleepwalking towards the end of society as we know it.

In 100 years or less, every Alpine glacier will be gone. No Alpine ice means no water store. Right now France (and most of western Europe) is experiencing extreme drought. The lack of winter snow, followed by extreme summer heat, means that rivers are running dry, the water table is shrivelling and the soil moisture content is the lowest it has ever been at this time of year. And that is WITH glaciers providing a steady supply of meltwater throughout the summer! Without them we are doomed.

No water means no agriculture, no agriculture means no food, no food means... goodbye society.

The Glaciers are dying.

A trip on the Panoramic gondola this summer has been beautiful but tragic. Nowhere is the stark reality of what we have done to this planet more in your face than in the high mountains. Once mighty peaks are literally crumbling in front of our eyes. Vallees blanche and cols blanc are now distinctly grey and brown. Glaciers are melting at an alarming rate and once permanent snow cover is now non-existent.

The ice is the most open and crevassed it has ever been in the history of skiing and alpinism. We have never seen the glaciers in such a state. Slopes which were once smooth and pristine white are now a chossy chaotic mess of rock, dust and crevasse. Simple valley traverses are now completely impassable, easy access alpine climbs are now virtually unreachable. And routes once considered 'safe' ski descents are now going to be death traps, if not completely impossible.

This is the worst summer we have ever experienced in the mountains, but it will likely be one of the best summers of the rest of our lives, let that sink in...

R.I.P. Alpinism.
