Ought to be a smidge as efficient at posting as I’m at imbibing…this was back at dinner at @argilerestaurant in Jan-26 with Rog (also a reminder to visit @jackcooking’s temple less infrequently).

BérecheĢ‚ Cramant 2019 - an olfactory ā€œkerpowā€ straight out of bottle, yellow fruit and minerality (crushed rocks?) alike. And then heady hazelnut brioche follows. Very long and driven. A reminder to #drinkmorebereche (albeit don’t commit the folly that I did of doing a hasty, inebriated BérecheĢ‚ shopping spree the same evening)

T Morey Chassagne Morgeot 2020 - Still an infant but bags of potential here. Lemon confit and a lovely reductive nose - fully in line with the House style. Nice tensile mid-palate and the structure to give further pleasure in the next half-decade+. Last glass best. One of the most consistent white burg producers for me and still (relative) bang-for-buck

Leoville Las Cases 2002 - Tertiary notes only starting to emerge here, still largely primary - an adolescent wine - at least this bottle was. Crème de cassis, plummy fruit, pencil shavings (unoriginal I know, but such is maturing old left bank Bdx), and sous bois. Fair bit of upside remains, and a strong showing for the vintage taken in Argile Restaurant by @chanbertin_

A special birth-year birthday present from Fewkesy last year, which we drank together last night.

Everything in complete harmony here, even sensuous. Blackberries and bramble a reminder of how youthful this remains, whilst tertiary notes of tar, graphite, and cigar box reveal the kismet of top claret when appropriately aged. Persistent and very, very long. This has aged (slightly) better than I have šŸ˜‚

Hospitality par none at Chez Dutton, what a way to close off wining in 2024.

A very subtle, brooding nose initially, giving some dark fruit - blueberries and bramble. With time, rose petals and some light tea notes. Not overly hedonistic but extremely elegant and delineated - struggled to get my nose out of the glass.

Lovely stony, mid- weight palate. Still a little chewy, promising some further development. A very quietly persistent finish, subtle but long. Again, nothing overt about this wine but it eventually demands your attention and sucks you in. Ethereal.

Shite photo, top plonk.

First time drinking Les Roises, thanks to the generosity of @behdadjoon šŸ™

Difficult to fully appreciate in a Paulee style night which that was but this was one of clear standouts (champagne of 2024? Tough call).

Citrus initially on the nose, giving mirabelle plums and a lovely toasty note with time in the glass.

Very much a coiled spring on the palate - you can just feel the underlying power and drive from this top wine. Densely concentrated yet with an almost searing, lip-puckering acidity. One wonders what this will be like in a decade. V grateful to have tasted this. taken in Avery Edinburgh by @chanbertin_

Egly Ouriet 2007

Reason number 8,794 why #champagneisbetteraged even in an ā€˜off’ vintage. 2007 was a particularly tricky year for Pinots Noir and Meunier (struggles with ripeness and rot).

Lovely orange peel and stone-fruit ripeness on the nose. A distinct sweet toastiness too - like a french toast made with cinnamon and vanilla. I’m getting carried away.

Very giving on the palate, a slightly oxidative feel (in a good way). Everything in balance - a champagne in its early autumnal phase that’s very pleasurable. Doesn’t quite have the acidity to enable 25+ years of aging like the best champagnes in the best vintages do, but this is a brilliant Egly nonetheless, adding to the notion that Producer > Vintage (@pistewino wisdom). by @chanbertin_

Drappier Reserve de l’Oenothque 2002

A fantastic example of why #champagneisbetteraged. Disgorged in 2021, this remains extremely youthful, offering up nuances of baked plum, kumquat and the usual buttery brioche that only well-aged champagne offers. Hard to believe this is a 22 year old wine (the original iPod was barely a year old).

The palate delivers on everything the nose promises, with an exuberant mousse and a lovely acid line that cuts through the rich, creamy texture - this carries the finesse of the ā€˜02 vintage. Perhaps slightly lacking in complexity/ length to the top late-disgorged champagnes but a great effort nonetheless from Drappier and great value for money. by @chanbertin_

Bollinger PN VZ16

It’s great to see the grower champagne movement inspire (pressure?) Grande Marques, like Bollinger, to produce more terroir-driven (site specific) wines.

Case in point with this fantastic release from Bolly. ā€œPNā€ being Pinot Noir, ā€œVZā€ indicating that the majority of the grapes were sourced from the village of Verzenay, and ā€œ16ā€ denoting the base (predominant) year.

A very subtle nose at first, considering this was disgorged (process of removing spent yeast) almost 4 years ago, building up slowly with pears, dried orange peel and freshly baked pastry.

Medium to full-bodied on the palate, layered and vinous - feels like a ā€˜proper’ wine with bubbles more than anything else. Wonderfully vigorous and fresh considering the youngest wine in the blend is 8 years old and the oldest, 18(!). It’s got a real undertow and persistence after time in the glass - you really feel it on the back palate much like a lozenge. Makes you long for the next sip immediately! by @chanbertin_
