Long post, but I like to look back on these and since this is the closest thing I keep to a journal, here’s a hunt recap of opening weekend 2026.

Opening morning started with calling in a group of jakes who all but got in my lap. Then a couple of miles later, I got to have a long heart racing conversation with an old tom, then finally pulling the trigger and hearing the deafening “click” of a misfire. The old mossberg 535 firing pin spring let me down. It was shortly after this that I realized at some point in my crawling around and moving from tree to tree I had lost my phone. I was, thank God, able to retrace my steps later that afternoon and find it. And this was all while running a fever and fighting a pretty nasty case of strep.

Since dad was lucky enough to get one about 10 minutes into the season, I was able to borrow his gun for the rest of the weekend. So two miniature crises averted. Called in a few hens later that afternoon/evening but no gobblers responded. After a fitful night of feverish sleep I had to dig pretty deep to get up and go try again. But I had a good idea now where some might be roosting so found some willpower that I probably should have reserved for something other than a turkey. I made out the black blobs of turkeys on the roost before sun up so backed off a little and got set up. With a little sweet talking, I got a good response prior to sunrise and decided to stay silent until they got off the roost. When they did it was a group of hens. The gobblers were a little further down the tree line. I’m not sure if it was my expert calling, or the water hole right in front of me, but they all were slowly headed my direction. Either way, the hens came to water with three toms close behind in full strut. I had a shot but there’s just nothing else like watching an old gobbler fanned out with the background of a Texas springtime sunrise, so I let them all get close to the point I could no longer work my slate. Fished the #bassmaster tournament with 193 other anglers on Caddo/Bisteneau this weekend. I never even considered fishing Bisteneau, but that turned out to be where almost all the checks were won. I think if I had more than one day to pre-fish I could have improved enough as I found some better bites on day two. But like a good Aggie, I didn’t lose. A little redemption. My best day on the water one week after my worst.

After last week’s little mishap, I was pretty determined to dial it in and make something happen this Saturday. Sacked up 98” for my pb tourney total and the win on the GOAT lake.
