Now then 👋 I’m Chance. Creative psychotherapist, retreat runner, facilitator, writer, northerner, dad.

I work online, in person and outdoors and on foot.

I help people all over the world feel understood, confront their joys and pains, and be motivated to make lasting, positive change in their lives. My work is about creating meaningful moments that matter and I enjoy making sense the madness of the human condition, one good conversation at a time.

In 2025, I was recognised in The Sunday Times Alternative Rich List, which celebrates people living extraordinary lives enriched through purpose, creativity and community impact. My Nan was proud.

I’ve worked with business leaders from Google, Virgin UK, Huel, Selfridges, Omnicom, Oatly, Depop and many others to write and deliver mental health strategies that land.

I’m the author of ‘How To Grow Through What You Go Through’ (Penguin Random House), a guide to everyday mental maintenance.

Outside of my therapy practice, I run:

- Ramble: retreats in Snowdonia led by a Royal Marine Commando and a Creative Psychotherapist, offering space to work on your mental health. One step at a time.

- Dad Chat: a meet-up for dads in Yorkshire connecting over the brutiful (brutal and beautiful), messy moments of parenthood.

Everything I do is about making therapy feel more possible, more human and less like a last resort.

Ta very much for reading.

First light at our farmhouse gaff for Ramble, Portugal. Soon, 10 people will join us. Perfectly imperfect humans, ready to put in the graft so that they can live better.

They’ll tell stories of triumph and trauma with tears of joy and grief. They’ll talk about heartbreak, ambition and love. Jealousy, tenderness and pain. They’ll tell stories of childhood and adulthood (and how these two things are never really far apart). They’ll talk about how things come together and how things fall apart. They’ll talk about making the most of their time here on this earth.

Its gonna be mint.

It is STILLLLL not enough. This week, the Government announced statutory bereavement leave: two weeks unpaid.

From April next year, UK employees who lose a spouse, partner, parent, adult child or sibling will be entitled to up to two weeks' unpaid leave. The government had already confirmed the new rights will also apply to parents who experience a miscarriage before 24 weeks of pregnancy.

Still not enough. There's SO many people who won't be able to afford to take that time off unpaid. We need to extend further.

If I was in a biz writing a policy, it'd say:

"We promise to show up for you during one of life’s hardest moments. Take two weeks paid bereavement leave. If you need longer, let's talk, we’ll work together to find what you need. We also know that grief comes in waves and you might need time later down the line for anniversaries, funerals, or days when you just need some space. We've got you covered for this with additional paid time off." by @chancemarshall

Big up @franxisaugusto for these lovely jubbly 120mm shots. I rarely like a photo of myself, but these are lovely. Pre-wander-nerves at @weoutherefest by @chancemarshall

I hate AI. I do. I miss knowing someone’s writing is their own.

I miss people struggling to find the words, but eventually getting there.

I miss not being constantly threatened with “learn it or get left behind."

I miss using em dashes because they make people think my writing came from ChatGPT.

I miss when my first emotion of seeing an animal doing an amazing thing was awe and not suspicion.

I miss absolutely sh*tty handmade flyers, food menus, business signs, and posters. I miss the spellos and the crossing out, black Sharpie on an old piece of card. I'd take all of this over AI slop.

I miss meeting people online without wondering whether there’s a machine somewhere between us.

I miss personality and edge and seeing someone's thought process in their shares and how they got there, connecting things that no machine could connect. by @chancemarshall

We come into this world with about four thousand weeks ahead of us, that’s if we live until we’re 80.

We’ll lose people we love, struggle at work, feel weighed down by responsibility, be paralysed by indecision and uncertainty, and feel stressed about our health, relationships or finances. It’s a fleeting, messy business this being human — we often feel alone, but Ramble retreats are a chance to be in it together. Whatever “it” is for you.

We’ve sold out and delivered all UK retreats for this year. They’ve been some of the best weekends of my little life. We’ve met some absolutely gorgeous people with properly inspiring stories. They’ve changed me.

We’re only offering *four* retreats next year in Wales, and +1 in Portugal.

If you’d potentially like to join us in 2027, leave a lil 👋 in the comments and I’ll do the rest. by @chancemarshall

Today, you'll see a lot of posts about World Suicide Prevention Day. And for some of you, you'll feel a crushing wave of guilt.

So, to the people wondering if you noticed enough, checked in enough, asked twice enough, or could have somehow done more...

- Sometimes, there were no signs you could have seen
- Sometimes, they knew they were loved and supported
- Sometimes, they didn't even have the words to explain

Sometimes, there is not single thing you could have said or done that would have changed anything or stopped someone from feeling that death felt less terrifying than life.

I know the intention is prevention with these posts calling us to check in more, but I can't help but think about the people reading them who've actually lost people to suicide. And the importance of remembering that someone’s suicide doesn't automatically mean we missed something, didn’t check in enough, or failed them.

Anyway, I'm with you today. And every other day. Go gently, pals. by @chancemarshall

As a therapist, I’ve worked with a lot of people who have felt suicidal. What I’ve come to learn is that we need are more fire exits:

Real, loving support of the tender kind. Friends, family and communities who show up for us in our seasons of suffering. Patience. Someone to be alongside us when we feel most alone. Hope holders. by @chancemarshall

From mint imperials to hankies up sleeves, jigsaws with missing pieces to jam donuts eaten on the sly. This is how we learned to be loved. This is how we can love ourselves again like. We don’t need wearable tech and constant optimisation.

We need:

- Elevenses, religiously.
- Hot Ribena and a slice of fruit cake.
- To live in slippers
- Go for walks to see the sheep
- Our favourite sweets under the pillow
- To print photos out
- To old onto people’s arms and bring them in close when you say summet funny
- To put a wee little hot water bottle in your bed half an hour before you get in it
