‘Orange Valley Road’ for shared marimba trio 🍊

Introducing my latest percussion ensemble work, a short, fun, fast-paced trio all on one marimba! Grab a couple of friends and be prepared to RUN 🏃🏻🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏼‍♂️💨

‘Orange Valley Road’ is a short, high-energy piece for three performers sharing a single marimba. The players weave around each other in a fast-paced choreography, mirroring the sharp twists and turns of a winding road. The title comes from the real Orange Valley Road—where I happened to be driving when the piece’s thematic material and concept first came to me.

You can find the full video on YouTube! The sheet music can be found at joeyengmusic.com/shop and is also available as a physical copy through @editionsvitzer 🎼

This piece was written for our concerts back in June with friends @a_prilcussionist and @chandler_percussion - was a fun project to put together! ☄️

A HUGE thank you to the @eti_detmold Tonmeisters who worked on recording this piece (I counted 16 microphones!!!):

Executive producer, editing, mixing, mastering: @nils_wallbaum

Assistant producer, recording engineer, editing: @moritzalbert01

Recorded in the @hfm_detmold Konzerthaus, Germany

Have a lovely day

I was up late last night picking videos for my audition portfolios, and stumbled across this recording from Great Plains. I remember being happy at the time with my ending but now listening back it’s motivated me a lot to finally take the time to fix the last few spots that have note accuracy issues, so I can put out a full recording of the piece!

My arrangement of Ravel’s menuet sur le nom d’Haydn! A beautiful work to explore on marimba if you’re interested in diving in past the normal Bach adaptations.

Ever wonder what setting up for a marimba quartet concert looks like? I hope you enjoy about 2 hours of setup and tear-down time condensed into 18 seconds. Now to do this for 11 more concerts and 3 more school visits. Thankfully, we have a great team for this tour!

My brain and hands might not be fully functioning after 16 hours of rehearsals in 2 days. But this new arrangement of Petrushka is so much fun to play.

Some Bach toccata in fugue in D minor. I still don’t understand how this arrangement isn’t the most played Bach yet.

I still believe these might be the best 8 bars of music written for marimba. As I’ve been gathering competition data for Great Plains I had to write myself into the Merlin category, hopefully proving I don’t have anything against people performing it at competitions.
