Description Without Place / Description Without Space, Book Design, Fall 2024

A do-si-do accordion book exploring liminal space. The outer “walls of text” use passages from Wallace Stevens’ "Description Without Place", while the inner accordion features excerpts from T.S. Eliot’s "Four Quartets". Printed on newsprint in reverse, the poems can only be read when held to the light. The structure and materials emphasize the tension between presence and absence, representing liminal spaces that are neither fully visible nor completely hidden. Finished with a laser-cut cover that left my desk smelling like a bonfire and made booking time on the laser-cut machine during arch final reviews crazy anxiety-inducing.

Also my only black-and-white project to date, a rare and elusive species in the Phenpimon body of work might I say.

$set of hand-built vessels i made last spring 🌼🌼🌼 an exploration of contrast and tension in form. was inspired by the idea of growth that breaks structure after seeing a tree root fracture the sidewalk on my morning walk. - #ceramic #handmadeceramics #pottery #ceramicdesign by @chandra.work$
