✨Rooted in the past—reaching toward possibility.✨ 🎨This is the spirit of @sharamays stunning work, which we were honored to experience during a special brunch and live conversation at @chandrangallery celebrating TORN UP. 🖌️Rooted in autobiography, the exhibition honors Mays’ grandfather, a house painter in Princeville, North Carolina, whose labor in the segregated South anchored her family for decades. In her hands, painting as necessity transforms into a practice that’s expansive and alive with color and possibility. 🪾Drawing connections between the cypress trees of her childhood in the South and the mangrove and banyan trees surrounding her new home in Cartagena, Mays’ paintings weave inheritance, belonging, and the shared histories of the African diaspora into every layered brushstroke—with titles drawn from slave manifests and serving as acts of remembrance and reclamation. ✨Thank you Shara for your deeply meaningful and layered work, and Chandran Gallery for inviting our @beingoodcompany members and friends of @mothermag to experience this very special Art Breakfast. 🔗See more photos at the link in bio🔗 📸: @senay.inanici by @chandrangallery

“My work transforms that memory of painting as necessity into painting as possibility—expansive, colorful, suspended, and thriving.” Shara Mays, TORN UP, a suspended textile installation extending her practice into sculptural form and examining lineage, labor, and landscape. @sharamays Photo by @marikoreed courtesy of Chandran Gallery by @chandrangallery

taking painting off the studio wall for an installation —— still working with color, but the canvas has become the brush strokes, and with time and labor the work takes shape —— Torn Up @chandrangallery opens October 10 and runs through December 30 in San Francisco —- #sharamays #largescalepainting #contemporaryart #contemporarypainting #soloshow by @chandrangallery
