I dreamed of creating a space for kids where dances of the African Diaspora aren’t just included — they are centered.

Where body positivity, history, self-esteem, and resilience are built — not through lectures, but through movement.

Where the next generation learns pride in their roots, strength in their bodies, discipline in their craft, and joy in their expression.

Where they see that the African continent is the foundation of so much of what the world calls dance — not just ballet.

In Oakland, we walk in the footsteps of legends — Katherine Dunham, Malonga Casquelourd, Mama Naomi & Papa Zak Diouf, Ruth Beckford, Halifu Osumare, C.K. Ladzekpo, Carlos Gilberto Aceituno, Blanche Brown, José Lorenzo — to name just a few.
Some are now ancestors. Some are still dancing and grooving.

We all are part of the same story.
The story of the African Diaspora —
a story that crossed oceans but never lost its heartbeat.
A story that lives in us.

At my core, I’m just a mom of three young daughters who got tired of waiting — and started building the spaces I wished we had.

We’ve now hosted two Bay Area Youth Pan-African Dance Conferences — and in October, we’ll welcome families flying in from across the country.

And even as cultural arts programs are facing devastating budget cuts, we will continue to thrive, just as my ancestors have done before me.

This conference has been fueled by community — by people who believe in the mission and have sponsored young dancers, even without children of their own in the program.

We are shaping more than dancers.
We are shaping confident, rooted, unstoppable young people.

The world may shift, but our foundation is unshakable.

I can show you better than I can tell you.
The Vision Continues.

A little walk through Taste of Africa® with yours truly! 🧡🌍

Months of planning, countless conversations, and a whole lot of love went into transforming Downtown Livermore into this beautiful celebration of Africa and the African Diaspora.
