I’ve been in Abu Dhabi since January on a work contract.
Not as an expat or influencer, not avoiding tax, just there for work.

I want to say how grateful I am to the UAE. Even in a tense and uncertain moment, the country has remained remarkably calm, organised and supportive of the many foreigners living and working there.

Last Saturday, while I was at the beach, the missile alerts began. The tone itself was oddly familiar…reminiscent of the alerts many of us remember from the COVID years, hearing it repeatedly was unsettling. Not panic-inducing, but enough to remind you that things around you are not entirely normal.

What struck me most was the contrast. Life continued in many ways as usual. Restaurants open, people going about their day, pizza still being delivered. Yet missile alerts going off overhead is, by any objective definition, not normal. My travel insurance certainly agrees, it now classifies the situation as a war zone.

By Friday I decided it was time to leave the UAE, at least temporarily. On Saturday I managed to secure one of the final three seats on a flight to mainland Europe (yeah Paris) the next flight available was not until Friday the 13th (lucky for some?!). I consider myself very lucky to have found one.

At the airport last night the alerts sounded again, and for a while nobody was even allowed inside the terminal.

What has been more frustrating than the situation itself, however, has been the response from the UK. The British embassy has asked UK passport holders to register their presence. Presence, not desire for a repatriation flight, their location. Lucky as there have been no evacuation flights, the first flights from Dubai were only published last night, and even those still have to be paid for, not tax free!

Meanwhile, much of the UK media coverage bears little resemblance to the reality on the ground…dramatic headlines, speculation and very little useful information for those actually in country.

The UAE has handled a difficult situation with calm and professionalism. I only wish the same could be said for the communication and support coming from home. taken in France by @chantalleday
