Another day, another walk…

I've always complained about the lack of varied terrain around here, but for the first time in my life, I'm actually grateful that Ottawa is as flat as freshly rolled pierogi dough! At least nature is never far away. And right now, that's something I appreciate more than ever. 😊

Yesterday we headed to Petrie Island. The trail was about 1.5 km - comparable to Mer Bleue from the other day but more challenging than the smooth Mer Bleue boardwalk. Here I found myself negotiating roots, rocks and sand.

At the end of it, I was DONE! 😂 Once again it was straight to bed with a painful ankle. I even took an Advil! Today is rest and relaxation day. No Thanksgiving dinner this year. Just taking it easy. Zero complaints. 😄

To everyone celebrating Canadian Thanksgiving - have a good one!

A beautiful mid October view of Meat Cove, Nova Scotia from two days ago.

This one was taken by my son who enjoys taking photography trips to different parts of the world.

This time he decided to stay in Canada and he's doing a road trip around Nova Scotia. He hasn't sent me too many pictures yet but I really love this drone shot.

The second photo features the photographer himself not far from Meat Cove - many moons ago! 😂

October is traditionally the time of year when I like to head out to the Laurentian mountains in Quebec for a scenic hike or two. The colours out there are spectacular!

This year things worked out a bit differently and I "hiked" the pancake-flat Mer Bleue bog near the city instead.

This was the longest walk I've done since last year. 1.2km never felt this looooong or exhausting 😂 but I'm proud to have completed the whole trail accompanied by my two support systems: cane and husband 😊

Not the most glamorous hike, but our little suburban tundra is nevertheless bursting with colour. The larches have all turned golden and are looking splendid! We also ran into dozens of bluejays and chickadees. Lots of fun close to home!

Since I've been posting Wrocław places this past week, I'll just keep going with it! 😄

These buildings make up the famous "Wrocław Manhattan" and it has an interesting architectural story.

They were designed by pioneering Polish architect Jadwiga Grabowska-Hawrylak in the 1960s and built in the 1970s. The complex consists of six 16-storey residential towers plus commercial pavilions. They were an attempt to prove that prefabricated construction did NOT have to produce monotonous, identical boxes.

The facades were designed to be sculptural rather than flat. Interestingly, they were originally intended to be completely white, with climbing plants growing from planters behind the curved facade elements and eventually cascading down the towers. This plan was never realized.

The porthole-like windows at the top are communal/recreational rooms.

I love how they look simultaneously very 1970s, futuristic, and a bit nautical. In Wrocław they have a rather unflattering nickname - the "toilet seat buildings" 😂

Nonetheless they are considered one of the most distinctive works of postwar Polish architecture.

There is also a historical reason why this experimental cluster of buildings could be built right in town. Much of this area had been deliberately demolished by the Germans in 1945 to create an emergency airstrip during the siege of Festung Breslau (Fortress Breslau) - the Nazi name for Breslau, which was then part of Germany and which is today's Wrocław in Poland.

The enormous cleared area was a consequence of the siege and after the war a decision was made to rebuild this devastated space in an entirely different, modernist form.

A city trip usually calls for a visit to a bookstore.

In Wrocław, it happened to be Tajne Komplety — a wonderfully cozy little place with couches, pillows, coffee, and plenty of books to get lost in.

I've visited this lovely gem of a bookshop twice now, in two separate years and somehow I can't wait to go back!

You hear a lot about how safe Poland is and how little theft there is compared to other countries. This is a case in point. That's me on the couch. I wanted my husband to take a picture of me, but someone had left their handbag (with a wallet!) on the seat while they went to browse books. Someone else left their backpack. So I removed the handbag and the backpack from the couch and sat down for the picture. Then I placed them back where they had been. Would you leave your bags lying around in a store while you go browsing? 😂

A cute alley in the old town of Wrocław - truly a city worth visiting! 🧡💛

Recently I've noticed something interesting and I'm curious if anyone else has experienced this as well.

The photos I post here are taken with my phone. I don't use any special editing programs. The very basic editing tools I use are in the Instagram app - mostly brightening, cropping, and sharpening. Nothing fancy or particularly artistic.

Lately I've been doing the same kind of editing in Google Photos and I've noticed that the second I retouch anything there, my pictures get an AI label. I literally brighten up a photo and Google shows "AI info". This label gets transferred to Instagram. Hence I've had a few photos here on Instagram labeled "AI Info".

However when I make the exact same basic editing changes on Instagram, there is no label. Why is that? 🤔

This has been bugging me for a while now but I've decided to stop stressing about it. So if you ever see an “AI Info” label above one of my posts, rest assured: I haven’t replaced the Eiffel Tower, added a sixth finger, or generated myself a new face (I barely show my face here anyway). I probably just brightened the photo by 10% in Google photos rather than in the Instagram app 😂

In August 2025 we paid a visit to the International Poster Biennial in Lublin, a celebration of contemporary poster art and design that unites creativity, bold ideas, and striking visual storytelling from around the world.

The exhibit was held at the Centre for the Meeting of Cultures - a massive, almost monumental architectural complex bringing together theatre, art, music, cinema, and contemporary design under one roof. There is also a fabulous bookstore as well as a unique rooftop garden - probably my favourite feature of the entire place!
