FREE TO BE ME (2021) opens tonight at 7:30 at Rietveldpaviljoen Amersfoort.

In the darkest and most depressing times, creativity is a survival strategy to remind yourself that you still have autonomy and power to change and shift the frequency of your surroundings as well as those around you’, @yumisakugawa says.

And that is exactly what we did that day. We were fresh out of lockdown, and I was finally able to create again. I felt a big need to create a space where people could enjoy eachothers company freely, in a safe way. To celebrate our differences and make space for one-another. It felt like a necessity for me, to create community, while simultaneously empowering each other. A stranger turning into a friend, turning into a lover, for some. A place in nature, outside of the busy city life. A place that was welcoming to whomever wanted to participate, for everyone that cared and needed it. A place where we knew what people needed, because we asked. With we, I mean @chantijesme and me, who worked endlessly by my side to organize this day for 87 people that showed up.

Two Black women, we were at the time. A Black bestie I always wanted, but never had growing up. As I was diving more and more into my own Blackness, I learned this: Black feminism is not about gaining and flexing power—it’s about finding freedom. It’s about securing the bodily autonomy, self-determination and wellbeing of all people, whether they fit into society’s restrictive ideals or not. Black feminism recognizes that no one has the authority to determine, investigate or invalidate the limits of someone else’s identity. It is committed to reducing harm and combating violence, especially against people who are disproportionately at risk - @olukukoyi

In a world where it is made so difficult to be free, free to be who you are, free to rest, to create and resist capitalism, but also free to get the medical help you need, especially if you are trans and femme, especially if you are Black, especially if you are fat, especially when you are all three..
