NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN. I’m in the middle of Blood Meridian, which sent me back to rewatch the most famous adaptation of a Cormac Mccarthy novel. Javier Bardem’s Anton Chigurh crosses West Texas with a tank of compressed air and a cattle gun, and he looks at the people he meets about the way you’d expect from a man carrying a cattle gun. He is polite. He has a pageboy bob. He has never once found anything funny, which is where most of the laughs in this movie come from. At the gas station he hasn’t decided yet whether the old man lives, and you can watch him still deciding, eating cashews. For all the chasing, the movie is a character stuydy of everybody else, of how each person who crosses his path tries to make sense of a man there’s no making sense of. Then Josh Brolin. He was shooting GRINDHOUSE when he heard about the part, so Quentin Tarantino directed his audition tape over a lunch break and Robert Rodriguez shot it on the production’s Panavision camera, with Marley Shelton reading Carla Jean. HELL OF A SELF TAPE SET UP. The Coens watched it and asked who lit it. As a note on a self-tape, I’d frame that. Brolin got in a room with them afterward, and his Llewelyn is a man who wants to believe he’s smart enough to keep two million dollars, and nearly is. Every decision crosses his face before he makes it. He goes back with the water anyway. Casting by the great Ellen Chenoweth.

THE GREEN KNIGHT. I enjoy this movie and the mythology behind it. The Once & Future King series by T.W. White is probably my favorite written telling of the Arthurian legend because it’s so accessible and whimsical at the beginning and then not unlike the story itself falls apart into something wild and tragic. This casting was interesting Dev Patel is obviously not the classic interpretation of a 5th century British knight but I found his performance beautiful and fascinating, thought it was a good example of color blind casting done correctly because Patel so inhabits the role of Gawain in all his weakness and ultimate acceptance of not only mortality but that in choosing to do what is right rather than what will yield the most praise, you will find a far richer sense of self worth. And I love this bit. A very sharp and brilliant boss once said “Chloë has an absolute desire to be great.” And I don’t think it was meant entirely as a compliment but it is accurate, I do more than anything want to be great at casting. But- and this has really clarified over the last year when I’ve spent a total of about 3 months solo backpacking through south east asia- I do very much also want to be good, and I’ve put a lot of thought into how to build a business with a principle that doing the good thing can also be doing what is best for business and yields the best result. I genuinely believe that most of the time doing the right thing in casting is also what generates the best results, although I think maybe that is increasingly seen as naive or even amateur in a filmmaking landscape that is in chaotic shambles and filled with a disillusioned sort of resigned cynicism. But I have never really minded being in disagreement with the presumed majority, and think my way of thinking is not only much more pleasant but infinitely more interesting. Casting by Louise Kiely.

MOONLIGHT. Three actors play Chiron across different life chapters: Alex Hibbert as the child, Ashton Sanders as the teenager, Trevante Rhodes as the adult. No rehearsal time. Nobody met before their first scenes together. The production was lean enough that the only way to work was to trust the casting itself. Mahershala Ali appears only in the first chapter as Juan, Chiron’s unlikely father figure and the emotional anchor of the film. Rhodes came in to read for Kevin. The moment he walked into the room, casting director Yesi Ramirez and Barry Jenkins saw it. Not the physicality, which was almost the opposite of the younger versions, but what lived underneath. Ramirez calls it vulnerability in the eyes. A thread connecting all three. She was looking for the same want in each of them, expressed through completely different bodies. In the diner scene, Kevin cooks for Chiron. After years of silence between them. Chiron watches. Doesn’t say anything. Doesn’t need to. Y TU MAMÁ TAMBIÉN. One of my favorite movie titles ever. Cuarón made a raunchy road movie and hid a eulogy inside it, cutting the sound every so often so a narrator can tell you what none of them know yet. Gael García Bernal talked Cuarón into casting Diego Luna as Tenoch, arguing that their real friendship would carry the one on screen. Both were 21, playing 17, and you believe every dumb thing they say to each other in that car. Maribel Verdú’s Luisa wants to live a whole life in one summer, and she’s the only one in the car who knows why. She holds the boys to a beach they made up and sets her own rules once they start fighting. Verdú plays her bossy and tender, and the mix shifts depending on which boy is being an idiot. She dances at the beach bar like the song is hers. Verdú said years later that Luisa brought them together and then disappeared, and then they disappeared from each other. Casting by Manuel Teil.

SWINGERS. And you are money babyyyy🤑Liman made Vaughn audition for a part Favreau had loosely built on him, and Vaughn refused at first. He figured that role would go to a name, because it always does. He got it. Trent wants Mikey out of the apartment and back in the world, and Vaughn plays that want with his whole body, arm slung over the seat, grinning, talking at a speed that leaves no room for doubt. I believe every word. Vaughn had so much aura in the 90s, it’s crazy. He is fantastic and I wish he did more stuff still because it’s very hard to find his level of charisma.
