I helped my mom move today! 😝 There was something incredibly apropos & humbling about doing manual labor all the while it’s being announced to the world that we’re premiering at Sundance Film Festival the most beautiful year long, non-stop labour of love that Alika & I dreamed the first spark of, Naz & Alika gave bones, & an incredible group of humans came together to give life to! Every Day in Kaimukī will play in the NEXT category; “Pure, bold works distinguished by an innovative, forward-thinking approach to storytelling populate this program.” 😳 Pure & bold are big words to live up to. Big words that perfectly encapsulate this film which I love because everyone involved swung for the fences at every turn; took daring creative & technical leaps of faith & never asked for the comfort zone. To be able to say you love the film you’ve made is a substantial gift, success & great feeling. I’m so proud of everyone who made this story shine on screen with their trust & talent. E Mālama Pono, Willy Boy This was a very special film to be a part of. It took a village & pu‘uhonua to do well, especially being made at the height of the pandemic & wanting to make sure the cast, crew, & community were kept safe. It was shut down once before coming back even better. Lovely opportunity to get to shoot B&W and build a look that prioritizes this Kanaka ‘Ōiwi cast. @atlaslensco Orion series primes are a big part of the look as is the 3/4 front lighting, much of which is done with shiny boards, that Gaffer @keokis10 & Key Grip @xavierfigueroa figured out in our testing. It took a lot of light to get the crunchy contrast I was after. @jadealexis was super diligent in making sure all the costuming looked its best without color. First of many collaborations! Big thanks to Elias Chang and his team for building out the set. Huge job! And major shoutout to @kapahawaii for providing our key location. @tomxshaw @tiltamax @sonycine We introduced the open source format we call AtlasScope (or AtlasScope 90) 7 years ago to open a portfolio of new aspect ratios to anamorphic shooters of all kinds around the world. The first feature film we know of done in this format is called @everydayinkaimuki by @chapinhall - pretty sweet feature film, but also very useful for all kinds of media on all kinds of cameras where people want to use the beautiful aesthetic qualities of anamorphic lenses in new ways.
