🇵🇸 This bookstore supports a Free Palestine. With all the news and propaganda circling our feeds, it's important to go straight to the source and understand the history. Thanks to the recommendations of many content creators here on IG, we've compiled a list of both print and audiobooks by Palestinian authors or in support of Palestine. You can find both lists through the link in our bio or through Bookshop.org and Libro.fm.

✨Books have the incredible ability to build empathy, impart knowledge, and introduce us to experiences outside of what we'd normally experience in our culture and community. That's why reading diverse books and having a diverse bookshelf is important. That said, it is also important to engage critically with the media you consume - you should always be aware of the background and potential biases of the content's creator (and who funds it), and never blindly accept what you are being told.

While purchases from these lists will benefit our store, we highly recommend choosing a store such as @crescentmoonbookstore to support with your purchase instead, or that you request these books from your library! Many of these (and others) are also available for FREE as an ebook from @haymarketbooks - link in bio! We only created these lists because we could not easily find a Palestinian list on either platform.

UPDATE: There is now an official @books_palestine list on Bookshop.org. Links to the list and general Books For Palestine linktree in our bio.

(Disclaimer: this bookstore is run by a white American. While all of the books on these lists were recommended and widely shared by Arab or Muslim authors, readers, and content creators in support of a free Palestine, there may be errors of exclusion, over-simplification, biases, etc.) by @chapterhouse_bookstore

🏏 Our Young Teen Book Club is meeting tonight at 5pm to discuss AARZU ALL AROUND by Marzieh Abbas!

The Young Teen Book Club is a peer-led group for 12-15 year olds. Members pick the books and lead the discussions!

___

📗Aarzu All Around
By Marzieh Abbas

A cricket-loving Pakistani girl stifled by patriarchal expectations disguises herself as a boy to get a job to pay her sister’s medical bills in this “lyrical action-packed debut full of determination and grit” (Reem Faruqi, award-winning author of Golden Girl).

Living with her aunt and patriarchal uncle in Karachi, Pakistan, recently orphaned twelve-year-old Aarzu detests the way she and her younger sister get treated like extras and excluded from all the fun stuff. Aarzu dreams of playing cricket, just like her male cousins and the neighborhood boys in the streets, but her uncle will hear nothing of it. According to him, girls ought to master the art of making round rotis, not play sports.

When her sister requires urgent medical treatment but finances are tight, Aarzu decides to earn money herself. She hears of a part-time job at a bungalow near her school—but it’s only open to boys. Aarzu has no choice but to disguise herself as a turban-wearing boy to get the gig.

Now, Aarzu must find a way to balance school, work, chores, and secret cricket practices—all without burning out or getting caught by her uncle—or else her dreams of making the girls cricket team and her quest to save her sister will crumble around her. taken in Chapterhouse Bookstore by @chapterhouse_bookstore

👻 Our spooky season book club is THE GIRL WITH A THOUSAD FACES by Sunyi Dean. Join us on Sat, Oct 24 at 6 for the discussion! Or anytime on our Discord.

___

📓 The Girl with a Thousand Faces
By Sunyi Dean

From the USA Today bestselling author of The Book Eaters comes The Girl with a Thousand Faces, a stunning Gothic tale set in a historical Hong Kong that meshes ancient myths and local legends into a haunting story of ghosts, grief, and women who will not forgive.

When Mercy Chan washes up on the shores of Hong Kong with no family, no money, and no memories, the only refuge she finds is the infamous, ghost-infested slum of Kowloon Walled City. Since then, she has rebuilt her life, working for the local triad as a ghost talker and dealing with the angry and bitter spirits who haunt the district. The filthy gutters and cramped alleyways of Kowloon have become her home.

But the past Mercy can’t remember isn't done with her. An unusually powerful ghost has infested Kowloon’s waterways, drowning innocents and threatening the district. It claims to know Mercy—and secrets from her past that are best left forgotten.

As Mercy is drawn into a deadly cat-and-mouse game with this malignant spirit, she begins to realize that the monster she fights within these walls may well be one of her own making. taken in Chapterhouse Bookstore by @chapterhouse_bookstore
