📖 Review - A New Kind of Clean by Iain Reid and Ellie Foumbi
Speculative Thriller - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Read if you’re looking for:
- Something short, fast, and bingey
- An eerie, “what is even happening” kind of story

Struggling actress Missy thinks she may finally have a shot at a big break when she lands an audition to be the face of a new product with the tagline “A New Kind of Clean”. But the audition isn’t what it seems.

This was a fast and fun read! If you’re looking for a short, eerie thriller to add to your fall TBR, this is a good pick! The writing is excellent and really immersed me in Missy’s thoughts and feelings in an unsettling way. I really enjoyed the first two-thirds; I liked the ending as well, but it did get a little weird. It’s definitely meant to be a more mysterious sort of ending, so make sure that’s something you’re ok with if you’re thinking of picking this one up!

📚🐉🔥 Can Fourth Wing Friday be a thing?

Happy release to Threshing Day! She is simply STUNNING and I’m so happy to be adding it to my Emperyean Series collection!
Unfortunately, I am too deep into other fantasy reads at the moment that I will not actually be reading Threshing Day right away. But I can’t wait to soon return to Basgiath and read more about all our dragon friends!

📖 Review - Republic of Glass by Catherine Leroux
Contemporary/Dystopian Fiction - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Read if you like:
- A near-future setting
- Societal critique
- Government conspiracies
- Literary-style writing
- A Canadian author and setting

In a near-future version of Montreal, an out of control epidemic of unhoused people results in the Government creating the Housing Assistance Program for Public Improvement, or HAPPI institutions that unhoused people are forced into. Journalist Sidonie sets out to find out more, and ends up in way over her head.

Wow, this was such a unique and thought-provoking read, I don’t think I’ve ever read anything quite like it before! The combo of a dystopian future with literary writing resulted in such a compelling and chilling story that really makes you think “this could happen”. Unfortunately, I did not like the ending, and I would have rated the book higher if not for the end. But I would still definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to think and have chills! And I super recommend to all my Canadian friends!

📖 Review - Peck & Peck by Bonnie Garmus
Historical Fiction - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25/5

Read if you like:
- Quirky and charming prose
- Interesting, in-depth characters
- Character-driven, slow-burn plot stories
- Scandal and corruption
- Poetry

Set in the 1970’s and 80’s, Bonnie Garmus’s sophomore novel follows Batter Gray, a young man who has wanted a career in poetry from a young age, as he goes to work for America’s most prestigious poetry journal: Peck & Peck. What he doesn’t expect is to discover scandal and corruption.

Having loved Lessons in Chemistry, I was so excited to have the opportunity to ARC read Bonnie Garmus’s second novel. Peck & Peck is similar to Lessons in Chemistry in it’s charmingly quirky written style, while still covering heavier topics. I found it interesting to be reading from a male protagonist’s point of view this time, and how Garmus was able to cleverly use poetry details within the story as she previously did with chemistry. I did find this book to be slower, and heavier on the character building than the plot itself. But the story was still very intriguing, and quite exciting in the last third of the book. I definitely preferred Lessons in Chemistry overall, but still appreciated this book for its rather unique manner. I would recommend readers, and especially lovers of Lessons in Chemistry, to go into this with an open mind but prepared for a slower burn plot with more character emphasis.

📖➡️🎥 Book to Screen Review - The Whisper Man

I read The Whisper Man in 2021 before I started my Bookstagram, so I never posted a review of it! But it ended up being my top thriller read of the year, 5 stars on both the mystery story and how hauntingly creepy the writing was! I remember getting chills while reading, and I didn’t see the ending coming, both of which are rare for me with thrillers! So I was really excited to see the book turned into a movie.

Overall, I thought the movie was ok. The acting was good and there were some creepy moments, but overall it didn’t come close to how well the book conveyed the atmospheric horror. If you haven’t read the book and enjoy creepy thrillers, you’ll probably like the movie. But if you have read the book, you’ll probably be a bit disappointed by the movie. And if you haven’t read the book but are interested in it, 1000% read the book first!

📚🍂 Happy September First!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year - the BER months! And of course the start of it has to be marked with stocking my fridge with pumpkin coffee creamer 🎃😍

Here’s what I currently have lined up to read this fall! I am deep in my re-read of the Shadowhunter Chronicles in preparation for The Last King of Faerie in November! This has been a bit slower going than I had hoped, but I’m chugging away at it! I’m also almost done this ARC, Republic of Glass, and it’s been really good so far!

And for my Kindle line up, I have a few ARCS, and then again with the Shadowhunter books I need to reread!

And finally, these are the upcoming new releases this fall I have my eye on! So many good ones coming out so soon, so little time!

Review - A Thousand Monstrous Forms by Saratoga Schaefer
Horror Thriller - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25/5

Read if you like:
- Retellings (Bluebeard!!!) with a modern twist
- Bone-chilling scenes
- Art
- Creepy manor houses

This horror thriller is a modern, gothic, sapphic retelling of the classic Bluebeard! Artist Poppy meets art dealer Celia and marries her after only 6 months, and then moves into her enormous and isolated manor home. But Poppy soon begins to realize that both the house and Celia are not what they seem. Especially when Celia forbids her to go into the basement…

I really enjoyed Trad Wife by Saratoga Schaefer, so I was so excited to be sent their next novel, and was even more excited when I read the Bluebeard retelling description! This book was so fun and sooooo creepy. The modern twist on the classic story with all female characters was so unique and well done. The writing was fantastic, and some scenes gave me literal chills they were so creepy. I will definitely continue to read thrillers by Saratoga Schaefer! If creepy horror thrillers are your thing, this book is definitely for you and would make a fantastic fall TBR addition!

📖 Review - Our Perfect Storm by Carley Fortune
Romance - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.75/5

Read if you like:
- Stunning Canadian West Coast scenery
- A dreamy resort with the coolest excursions
- Food and cooking
- Complicated family relationships
- Character growth
- Childhood friends to lovers

Carley Fortune once again delivers us the ultimate Canadiana novel - this time set in Tofino, British Columbia and featuring a childhood friends to lovers story!

What I loved most in this book was the stunningly romantic descriptions of Tofino, the resort, all the activities, and the food and cooking. Not only does Carley Fortune write the best settings, she also gives her main characters the most interesting jobs - this time it was a chef and a journalist, which were both so fun to read about. I loved both George and Frankie as interesting individual characters with great backstories and fantastic growth; however, I was kind of just meh about them as a couple, which is why I couldn’t give this book 5 stars. Childhood friends to lovers doesn’t really do it for me. But the rest of the book was fabulous! I recommend this for the ultimate outdoor summer read!

📖 Review - Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke
Contemporary Fiction - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5

Read if you like:
- Criticism of traditional gender roles in today’s society
- Thinking critically about uncomfortable topics
- Unlikeable characters

Yesteryear is a part-drama, part-satire, part-critical literature story that follows “trad wife” influencer Natalie Heller Mills as she builds her life around her online persona until one day when she finds herself actually living in the 1800’s as a traditional wife.

This book is buzzing everywhere, and for good reason. The longer I sit with this book, the more I’m impressed with what it managed to accomplish in being an absolutely brilliant critique of societal gender roles and misogyny. Natalie is the ultimate unlikeable character, but that’s sort of the point. While hard to read at times, I think this is such an important book and I would recommend it to everyone.

📖 Review - It Could Have Been Her by Lisa Jewell
Thriller - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25/5

Read if you like:
- Lisa Jewell’s thriller writing style
- Multi-POV and multi-timeline
- Slow, but dark, suspense
- Missing girl and old hidden secrets thriller themes

When Jane Trevally finds a lost dog near her home and tracks down its owner, she is shocked to discover the owner lives at a house where she had a narrow escape over 20 years ago.

I absolutely love Lisa Jewell thrillers so I was so happy to get an advance copy of her latest! I really enjoyed it - it’s definitely a “classic Lisa Jewell”, with her signature style of writing a dark and suspenseful atmosphere that has you quickly turning pages and piecing it all together as you go. This book felt very Then She Was Gone meets The Family Upstairs to me, so if you enjoyed either of those you would likely enjoy this one as well! I was a little bit disappointed with the ending in the sense that I was hoping to get more answers from different POVs, but I still really enjoyed the book overall! And a fun note - if you read her last book, Don’t Let Him In, you will recognize the main character in this book as a secondary character from that one!
