Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka does not need an introduction. This was my first read by kafka and For days ...I just couldn't comprehend my thoughts about this book.

Less than 100 pages of a book and I felt grief,sympathy towards Gregor, anger towards his family but above all the ending was heartbreaking and somewhat uncomfortable.

This guy wakes up in the morning and transitions into a bug but the story isn't just about that. Instead of worrying and panicking about himself... he's worried about his job, his responsibilities, or what he can do for his family. His self worth depended on how useful he was to his family.
It was heartbreaking how they turned their back on him bcoz he couldn't serve them anymore.
Gregor was treated as a person primarily because he was useful. Once he became useless, he became disposable.

This made me wonder how many of us feel that way? that if we're not in a position to support our loved ones, then that makes you a burden and they're better off without us.
And How this classic still resonates with modern day society.
The ending implicates a fresh start which felt conflicting and just didn't sit right with me. The worst part was what gregor did as a kindness to his family.

Ladder of the years by Anne Tyler.

This one is about a 40 yr old woman who goes missing in the middle of a family beach vacation.
No...she wasn't kidnapped..it's not a thriller.
She ghosted them! She wasn't appreciated by her family..She lands in another town, living an entirely different reality from what she did for the last 20 years.

The first half of it was certainly a build up of the story so I had to be patient, but the latter half was gripping, engaging and I was happy with where it was going.

Some parts of it were dragged a Little more than necessary and I had better expectations from the ending. She may have changed as a woman but , there was no actual confrontation and the ending stays unresolved which tbh was disappointing.

Maybe bcoz I wanted more for delia. She deserved any apology reassurance from her family which she never got, which was unsettling.🫠

As the title suggests, Focus on what matters by Darius Fordoux is a collection of 'stoic' letters on living well.

Stoicism is a Greek philosophy which basically means to focus on things that are in your control and free yourself from the ones that aren't .
It's about accepting those things (for eg. Bad weather, recession, past mistakes) as they are and not hampering your inner peace by worrying about it. Do the right thing tho.

Review:

I was looking for another book when I stumbled upon this one and I am glad I did.

It's been ages since I read a self help book and this one did not disappoint at all.

Really loved the illustrations in these chapters which also added a deeper meaning to it.

Tbh, there were many instances where the statements contradicted with some of my own thoughts and beliefs but I couldn't help but also relate with them on a deeper level. It made me question myself on what actually matters to me and some of my own patterns of behaviour.

It's an easy read and I think everyone should read this book at least once.

My One True North by Milly Johnson.

Reading this one felt like watching a rom com movie layered with tragedy underneath.

A story about grief, but not just grief. Sometimes grief isn't only about losing someone to death. Sometimes it's grieving the relationship you had already lost while they were still alive.

*Tiny spoiler* : the central plot reminded me SO much of the old TV serial Bepannah...ifykyk👀

A bittersweet read about loss, betrayed,healing and finding your true north again.

It was an easy yet lengthy read with predictable plot twists for obvious reasons.
