a woman is no man review

3.75 ★ |

I went in blind, so other than the fact that I knew this would follow an Arab lead, there’s not much I could’ve told you about the story was going to be about or the direction it was going to go in.

I love books by Palestinian American authors, I think they always encapsulate you into a beautiful story as well as as a historical lesson, and this one was no different.

At the surface, this one teased you with aspects of and about the generational trauma many Palestinian immigrants coming to to America seeking a better life endured. it also highlighted aspects of what the role of a woman in some homes may look like traditionally.

It always makes me laugh when we talk about gender roles in America because there’s a whole different meaning to the rest of the world, and this was just such a prime example. Things are simple as reading, education, home life to touch on a few.

I loved the light that Etaf shed on the fact that we are still running into the issues around conflating religion with culture. She did so in a tasteful way: she highlighted the subtlety between the line that is so often crossed and pardoned under the guys of religion.

I loved so many parts of this book for so many different reasons, however, I genuinely struggled with the ending. It didn’t have the same intentionality, at least from my perspective, as the rest of the book. I felt like the rest of the book was seamless in its delivery, and it was fluid. There was quite a bit of a tonal shift in the last 20%, and I felt as though that changed the experience for me. by @chapterwane

mid week check in ♥︎

i’m just in the headspace where I just don’t like the act of reading at the moment and there’s nothing that I can pick up that is gonna change my mind. We can call it a word that rhymes with dump that I won’t speak into existence, but that’s what it feels like. The only way out is through, so I am pushing 😂 I’m really quite a few books. By quite a few, I mean three:

Listening to cowboy casual: me personally I love a slutty little moustache moment, and I am actually listening to it on @librofm and having a really good time. I think the narration is so fun and so engaging. as someone who genuinely struggles with Audiobooks and just tunes them out, this one has been really great. Highly recommend.

Next step is Dionne Daphne— I say I’m reading that one but reading in quotation marks because I have been on 25% for about three days waiting for someone to catch up.

We then have Atmosphere, this one is exceptionally hard for me to read at the moment because I am realising that I really have a hard time with physical books at the moment. I don’t know what it is, but it feels like I’m reading one word per hour and I can’t deal with that. But I really am trying to push through and not get it on e-reader because I have to get through some of my physical TBR and this is my way of holding myself accountable for it.

I think that’s it. I think that’s all I’m reading!

review: One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This
5 ★ |

Tommy Orange describes this book as what the world is now, all that it isn’t anymore. If I had to summarise this experience as anything, it would be exactly that.

To think this was set off by a tweet written by Omar El Akkad, which read: “One day, when it’s safe, when there’s no personal downside to calling a thing what it is, when it’s too late to hold anyone accountable, everyone will have always been against this.”

The book is described as a breakup letter with the West. But if I had to say it was anything else, I would say that it is a love letter to hope, to resistance, to critical thinking, and to all of those who have in some way, shape, or form held any capacity for change in the West from an Arab American immigrant perspective.

This one is by no means an easy read. If anything, I’d label it one of the most challenging books I’ve read this year for sure, and maybe I’d go as far as to say ever. It challenges complacency, challenges the rhetoric that so many of us are accustomed to living with in the West, and challenges the feeling that what we’re doing is not enough when there are people in more dire situations doing more. But it also challenges hopelessness, and I think that’s what I struggled with the most through all of this.

It’s extremely engaging, which I think for a non-fiction book deserves five stars in and of itself, because so many times people lose interest or disengage from this genre. The irony behind that is not lost.

I loved that it reflected on current-day politics, media ethics, and societal norms. I wouldn’t recommend reading this one in one sitting like I thought I would; it’s really a take what you can, sit with it, then reflect kind of book.

I’m optimistic and naive enough to believe that there is a world in which this will become required reading in schools. However, I don’t see a world in which that happens yet. But as he so beautifully states in so many ways within this book, who knows… maybe one day things will change. by @chapterwane

˚.⋆꒰১ monday blues ໒꒱⋆.˚

hi babies, I hope you all had a lovely weekend and feel rested.

to be honest, the only blues I’m taking into this Monday are these book covers. I love how everything seems to slow down this time of year: I guess that’s the -ber month effect, right?

I started at atmosphere yesterday, aside from the fact that so many people that I trust have said that they think I would love this one, one of my favourite subjects has always been space in the universe and anything NASA related, so I’m sure that this is gonna be an amazing ride and I’m so excited to get my heartbroken into 1000 different pieces.

over the weekend I ended up pausing the revelation of the Dionne Daphne at around 25%. The only reason why I was paused is because I needed to order a physical copy and I’m reading this in a book club and as a buddy read. At 25% I was already hooked, and you all know I’m quite strict. I remember seeing @thatreadingjawn’s initial review on this and I was captivated by the storyline so immediately put it on hold in my library.

I also added the invisible life of Addie LeRue back to my September list, because it’s one that I started last year and just never got around to finishing it. I don’t fully know if I’ll start it over or just from where I ended, but saving this for the next rainy day that we have.

wishing you all a lovely week and I hope you get a five star read this week. ♥︎ by @chapterwane

girlypops, this is not a drill!!!! the ber months are officially here. I honestly have nothing to complain about for August, it was such a wholesome and loving month, and I had a blast honestly every day of the month. I got to see friends that I haven’t seen in so long, catch up with loved that I haven’t heard from in ages because you know, life.

I got a lot of reading done in the beginning half of the month, and I was committed to my arcs!!!!

I got to read some books that have been on my TBR forever in a day, which is always such a good feeling. As always, all my stats are in the last slide.

Wishing you all a beautiful entrance into this new month, and I hope it treats you kindly. I hope you get everything your heart wants and more. 🤎🧸🍂 by @chapterwane

review: Trust Fall
rating: ★★★★
I thought this was such a lovely introduction to Lynn painter’s literary world. She writes with a certain level of digestible ability that is just so fun, and easy to pick up right where you leave off.

I wouldn’t go as far as say this book was perfect by any means, but it was perfect for what I was looking for in the moment. I found the characters to be pleasant and enjoyable and full that teenage angst that I’m currently loving these days.

She delivered that gossip girl feel, where she nailed the characters and their complexities very well. Truly a sucker for a classic autumn in New York book, and this one delivered that to a T. I wasn’t sure going in how the plot was going to all piece together, but I genuinely feel like she did a good job of tying it all in and not letting it run on blindly. As always, I look for a story outside of the main characters and I felt as though the side characters in this one brought the story to life in such a fun and unique way.

Thank you so much to @simonteen for this eArc. I’m so excited for it to come out and I am even that much more excited to read more of Lynn Painter’s work!

oh Julie Olivia🥺 I hope that your heart always stays protected from the harshness of the world. I’m a romance reader through and through, but my forever comfort setting will be a small town populated with close knit families in a common location where everyone comes to fill their cup.

as soon as August 1 hits, my brain immediately goes to autumn mode. while i would say this is more of a winter read, it still gave me all of the feels of the season that I cannot wait to come! there’s so much to love about this book; the side character is bring the story to life in a way that I loved to see. through them you fell in love with the main characters and a whole new light. I genuinely enjoyed that Beverly was doing her best to figure things out, she understood how much she’s committed to her goals, but commitment sometimes isn’t enough and rejection is part of the story. I loved how ease was knitted into the story and then unconventional way. we as the readers saw the “right next step” and so there was so much anticipations around the FMC and MMC figuring out their next steps as individuals.

I’d say the only reason why I didn’t read it if five stars because of how angry the antagonist made me, thats literally all!!

Griffin was probably the most interesting character imo. he’s flawed and patient, kind yet impulsive all in the same breath. this is easily one of the cosiest romances that I have ever read, and at no point that I feel as though the story was dragging in an unnecessary direction, or various chapters could be eliminated, or that there was unnecessary conflict. everything was tastefully put together and I could not set it down. I remember thinking I can’t wait for the day that we get to see this as a screen adaptation, hopefully.

I can’t wait for it to hit the shelves on September 8th ♥︎ and as always i buddy read this with my baby @whatsrynreading— thanks for always buddy reading with me hehehe 😭🤍 taken in Elk Grove, California by @chapterwane
