Save the date, Wizards of Elixirs is almost here again! 🧙‍♂️🍸✨

Wizards of Elixirs is our annual Halloween cocktail competition with our longtime friends at The Perfect Purée of Napa Valley, and it is exactly as fun as it sounds. Some of Wine Country’s best bartenders show up in costume, get wildly creative behind the bar, and build original cocktails for a shot at the judges’ prize, People’s Choice, and, of course, bragging rights.

Last year, 17 bartending teams jumped into the madness. There are incredible drinks. There are costumes. There is very serious competition disguised as a Halloween party. And somehow, in the middle of all of it, we get to raise money for our local community too.

Creative, competitive, slightly chaotic, and very much our kind of night.

Save the date 10/27/26. More details, more cocktails, and more wizardry soon. 🪄 taken in Petaluma, California by @charbaydistillery

Some of our favorite moments are the unexpected ones. 🥃

When friends, longtime supporters and fellow spirits people come through Charbay, it gives us a chance to stop for a minute, share what we’ve been working on and pour something together.

There’s something pretty special about sharing the place where it all actually happens, surrounded by barrels, bottles, experiments and a whole lot of Charbay history.

Before Charbay was Charbay, there was this. Miles and Susan, Marko and Lara. Domaine Karakash. A whole lot of work and a pretty big leap of faith.

We were issued DSP 177, which still kind of blows my mind when I think about it.

A few years later, our first 660-gallon Alambic Charentais copper pot still arrived from Cognac, France, custom made for the family.

I love these old photos because they make the story feel less like “history” and more like… wow, they were really just out there building this thing. No giant roadmap. No polished brand. Just family, generations of distilling knowledge, a lot of hard work, and a belief that there was a place in California for what they knew how to do.

And now, more than 40 years later, we’re still here, but now it’s our boys running around the distillery, expanding with us.

The name changed. The distillery changed. The bottles definitely changed. 😂 But so much of the important stuff really didn’t. We still do things by hand. We still take our time. We still obsess over details most people would probably never notice. And we’re still a family figuring it out, building it, and carrying it forward.

And how cute was young Marko?! taken in Ukiah, California by @charbaydistillery

The cauldrons are coming out, the cocktails are getting strange, and some of Wine Country’s best bartenders are preparing to work a little magic behind the bar!

Wizards of Elixirs returns October 27, 2026. ✨

Consider this your warning to clear the calendar, plan the costume and prepare to drink something wicked.

What should we dress up as?

Two bottles. One very Charbay kind of Whiskey Sour. 🌰🥃

This is the kind of cocktail we love: familiar enough to know exactly what you’re drinking, with just enough of a left turn to make it interesting.

Doubled & Twisted brings the whiskey backbone. It’s our blend of Straight Malt, Pilsner and Stout whiskeys, all distilled in our Alambic pot still, with layers of malt, toasted vanilla, citrus, smoke and hops.

Then comes Nostalgie.

Made with hand-picked Black and English walnuts, a long extraction, and our family’s blend of herbs and spices, it adds this deep, earthy walnut note that plays ridiculously well with whiskey and fresh lemon.

Together, it’s nutty, bright, rich and just tart enough.

Nostalgie Walnut Whiskey Sour
1½ oz Charbay Doubled & Twisted
½ oz Charbay Nostalgie Black Walnut Liqueur
¾ oz fresh lemon juice
¼ oz walnut syrup or simple syrup
½ oz egg white or aquafaba, optional but very worth it

Dry shake first, then add ice and shake again. Double strain into a coupe and finish with a candied walnut or a little freshly grated nutmeg.

A Whiskey Sour, with a very Charbay detour. taken in Ukiah, California by @charbaydistillery

At the center of Charbay is Marko.

And I get a front-row seat to the way his brain works. 😂

He’s a distiller, a problem-solver, a little bit mad scientist, and someone who genuinely cannot leave well enough alone if he thinks something can be made better.

That curiosity is just part of who he is. So is the family history behind it. Distilling isn’t something Marko stepped into as a career. It’s something he grew up with, learned from his dad (and all about the sales portion from his mom!), carried forward, questioned, pushed, and made his own.

I’ve watched him chase ideas that sounded slightly crazy, obsess over details most people would never notice, and take the long way around simply because he believed the end result would be better.

That’s Marko.

He loves the craft. He loves the challenge. And after all these years, he still gets excited about what we might make next.

I have a feeling that part of him will never change, thank goodness❤️ taken in Ukiah, California by @charbaydistillery

There’s a reason Tapatío has always felt like such a natural fit for us! Way before we ever imported it, there was already a connection. The Camarena family has been making tequila at La Alteña in the highlands of Jalisco since 1937. Different country, different spirit, different family... but so much of the way they do things just felt familiar to us.

Family. Tradition. Patience. Doing things the right way, even when the right way takes longer. Miles and Marko first got to know Carlos Camarena distiller to distiller, working alongside him in Mexico, talking shop, sharing ideas, and building a real friendship. Eventually, that relationship is what led us to bring Tapatío to the U.S. in 2012. And I think that’s part of why we’ve always felt so connected to this brand.

It was never just, “Here’s a tequila we should import.”

It was people we respected, making something we genuinely believed in, in a way that made sense to us because it looked a whole lot like home. Different families. Different countries. Very similar DNA.

That shared way of looking at the work is really what brought the two families together. 🤍 taken in Ukiah, California by @charbaydistillery

Sometimes the difference is measured by the drop.

Small adjustments, a lot of tasting, and absolutely no shortcuts.

Taste. Wait. Taste again.

There’s a lot behind a bottle of Charbay that never makes it onto the label.
