REAL ESTATE UPDATE: Could Canada’s Foreign Home Buyer Ban Change in 2027? Canada’s federal government is reviewing its options as the foreign home buyer ban approaches its scheduled expiry on January 1, 2027. Introduced in 2023 and later extended, the ban restricts many non-Canadians from purchasing residential property in Canada, subject to specific exemptions. So, what could happen next? The ban could expire: Foreign buyers may regain the ability to purchase certain residential properties, depending on the rules in place. The government could amend the policy: One proposal is to allow foreign buyers to purchase newly built homes, similar to an approach used in Australia. The restrictions could continue in some form: The federal government is weighing housing affordability, supply, and the potential role of foreign investment. Why does this matter? Any changes could affect international investors, property developers, and the wider Canadian real estate market. However, no final decision has been announced, and the current restrictions remain in effect unless the government changes them.
