POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
The first image I finished of Brandy Cinnamon Wages was this acrylic on canvas from 2009. I had quit trying to be a musician in 2002, and was trying to paint, with mixed results and mixed reception. I was seven years into this series with winged women.

At first I called them fates and then faters, and I knew that they were not fairies nor angels, but women that something had happened to as their lived progressed that had made them able to fly to another dimension and back. There are some examples in the extra slides.

I enjoy country music and thought their Faterfair dimension should have a country singer who dressed all in black, who disappeared and reappeared as a kind of Bobbie Gentry and Johnny Cash rolled into one, who sang sombre tales and spiritual metaphors about life’s troubling mysteries. I did this black-winged painting and thought I was done with her, but she was not done with me.

Her stories and quotes began to fill my mind. Other characters in her life were nearby in these tales; her first lover Evangeline, her daughter Angela December, and her sister Crystal Carmel.

Brandy Cinnamon said, “These people are important to me, you can’t represent me without representing them.”

“I can’t fit all this in a drawing or painting,” was my protest.

“Then write it out.”

“I am fairly dyslexic. I have no post-secondary.”

“Same as me. You being that way too will make transcribing my story easier.”

“Painting all the illustrations for all this will take too long.”

“You’re better and faster at drawing. I sing well, but I don’t try to do a lot of guitar solos. Play to your strengths.”

“This still seems like it will take a long time.”

“Don’t worry. I’m not going to shut up. For one thing, you missed my cross pendant in that painting.”

“I knew it was there, but I figured it was under your blouse.”

“I have longer cross pendants for ruffled or bow blouses. I always wear a cross. I see that you didn’t miss my crimson panties though. Men.”

“Is that wrong?”

“No, it’s right. I always wear crimson panties. It’s just that I have other stories besides that one.”

“How many stories have you got?”

A black-winged country singer recalls 58 years of life as she crosses a dangerous wasteland to the void, where she must battle a murderous demon bent on destroying the world she left behind.

Here is a clip of me answering chat’s questions during my livestream drawing of Chelsea Wolfe.

Some questions we covered were: How to know when you’re finished? (Part of this is in the clip.) As well as the practical question of how to use a blending stump, and the broader question of how to find your own style. I talked about not only finding and playing your strengths, but also knowing and sometimes playing up your mistakes, as both of those are the things that make your artwork unique and human, and this is what people are yearning to see in artwork right now. Making human drawing is apparently still interesting enough that people will watch it live for an hour.

Swipe to see the scanned drawing, and the drawing of Thora from Mission Stardust that I demonstrated in the previous live stream.

I absolutely had to do a retro-style drawing of Essy Persson as Thora from the pan-European sci-fi Mission Startdust (1967).

The film is a “no ideas are bad” stew of cliches stirred in with totally off-the-wall concepts out of nowhere, in which Commander Thora serves as the mad scientist and his beautiful daughter rolled into one. She alternates between tolerating an absurd Captian-Kirk-style kiss from the male lead as Perry Rhodan, and cooly-executed acts of feminine rage. In one she obliterates her former captors’ entire villain island in a cosmic firestorm unleashed from her fabulously mod spaceship, after which she sits and delivers the movie’s banger line, “That’s the end of a lot of evil men.”

I believe that arthouse films and B movies have their own horseshoe, and Mission Stardust gets so strange in places that I would put it in the gap. Andy Warhol would let anything happen in his films and focused only on the poise and charisma of his “Superstars” to carry every frame, while chaos or boredom proceeded around them. In many ways that is Thora’s own mission in Mission Stardust, and for me at least, it ends up being a lot the same.

Essy Persson grew exhausted with the nonsense and limitations of being a movie actress, and studied art. The art business is possibly a dubious route to escape nonsense, but hopefully she felt more in control at least by herself at her canvas. Sadly I could only find one example of her artwork online, but it is a great piece of cool mod cubism with a beach made of geometric faces, and I would love to see more.

And I hope my sketch does her onscreen presence justice.

Maybe it doesn’t look finished to some, but I like to leave artwork with rough edges. I like the tension between the mark and the image, and I count on my line control to hold it together. I believe the nature of the line can contribute to telling the story along with the content of the drawing. People are looking for art with a human touch.
Here is Brandy early in her story at 19, in a moment of isolated turmoil.

One day after he was named Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the Canadian Country Music Awards, Parry Sound’s @sullyburrows Burrows brought his rootsy country to the final music show of the @westernfair Fair on Sept. 20th. Along with his own charting songs, he played a cover of Eric Church’s ‘Springsteen,’ and Springsteen’s ‘Atlantic City,’ which he has fashioned after a version by what says is one his favourites, The Band. There was also some evidence of a growing Sullymania in the appreciative crowd. I first saw Sully in a showcase at London brewing and was impressed, so it is great to see him on the rise.
