Being a mom is hard. Being a mom to a medically complex child is something else entirely.

My 8 year old has had over 12 hospital admissions… and that number alone doesn’t even begin to tell the full story. The sleepless nights, the fear and the constant unknowns is overwhelming in ways I never imagined.

What’s been even harder is the fight. The fight to be heard. The fight to have concerns taken seriously. The fight just to get doctors to run the tests that could give answers. No parent should have to advocate this hard for basic care. No child should have to go through so much without clear direction or help.

You learn quickly that being a “good mom” in this situation means being relentless. Asking questions. Pushing back. Speaking up even when you feel exhausted or dismissed and you’ve got tears streaming down your face. But the truth is… it shouldn’t have to be this way.

There are so many of us parents carrying the weight of uncertainty, loving our children through complex medical journeys, and holding onto hope even when nothing seems to be working.

If you’re walking a similar path, please know you’re not alone. And if you’re not please listen, support, and help bring awareness. Our kids deserve better. 💜

One of my favorite hikes in Tennessee is out at @bellsreserve a short hike to a bluff that overlooks the harpeth river and some surrounding farms. It’s infusion day, which means six hours in a tiny room with the girls.
But I’m grateful.
Two years ago today — December 29, 2023 — I was in a hospital room with my 6-year-old who weighed only 40 lbs and was in the 1% for weight-to-height ratio. We had already been there for two weeks, and nothing about her case made sense.
She had an NG tube.
She couldn’t walk.
She slept more than 20 hours a day.
She was practically lifeless in a hospital bed.
She was a medical mystery to the eight specialists on her team. One even said her case should have been studied — crazy, right?
Two years and a rare autoimmune disorder diagnosis later, she’s thriving.
We have a treatment regimen that (hopefully) keeps relapses at bay and a neurologist who is nothing short of amazing. She’s back to a healthy weight, and she’s picking up on school faster than she ever has before.
Please advocate for your children.
Yes, it’s exhausting.
You’ll do a lot of your own research.
You’ll stand toe-to-toe with professionals who think they know everything about the human body, I promise you they don’t.
You’ll feel crazy repeating yourself over and over.
But your child will thank you.
I’ll always share her story, in hopes that it may save another child. ❤️
