A safe house should never become another source of trauma.

During my stay at a survivor shelter, social workers reportedly treated THC as “tik” while making allegations I dispute. I challenged those claims and have shared video evidence of my concerns.

What followed was a forced exit, with SAPS and emergency medical services involved in the circumstances surrounding it. For me, the experience was deeply distressing and intimidating, particularly as an AuDHD survivor already navigating complex trauma.

This raises serious questions about evidence-based decision-making, safeguarding, the handling of neurodivergent survivors, and the procedures followed when a vulnerable resident is required to leave a shelter.

Sections 10 and 12 of South Africa’s Constitution protect dignity and freedom and security of the person. Whether these or other legal obligations were breached depends on the evidence and circumstances. I believe these concerns deserve proper, independent scrutiny.

I am not naming the facility or exposing other residents. I am sharing my experience, preserving the evidence and seeking accountability through formal channels.

Survivors should not have to choose between speaking up and protecting the little stability they have left.

A safe house must be accountable for the safety it promises. Survivors deserve dignity, evidence-based treatment and a fair process.

A safe house should never become another source of trauma.

I entered seeking safety, stability and the chance to recover. Instead, I experienced treatment that left me feeling intimidated, unsafe and further traumatised.

What concerns me most is the way emergency medical services and SAPS became involved in circumstances surrounding my forced exit. From my perspective, these systems were used in ways that felt coercive and intimidating, rather than supportive. The consequences were especially distressing as an AuDHD person already navigating complex trauma.

A shelter should not strip survivors of their dignity, silence their concerns or leave them more traumatised than when they arrived.

I am documenting my experience, raising formal complaints and asking for accountability. I will not expose other residents or identify the facility here, but protecting an organisation’s reputation must never come at the expense of survivors being heard.

Survival should not require silence. Safety should mean safety. And accountability must extend to the places entrusted with protecting us.

Two years ago, my life changed in less than a minute.

Sphamandla Mqadi strangled me and lifted me off the ground. He was convicted of GBH and has now been given a suspended sentence. He still walks free.

The case is over.
The aftermath isn’t.

I’m still rebuilding the life I had before that moment. I’m still carrying things nobody sees.

I don’t want retaliation. I want accountability, healing, and the freedom to tell my own story.

A courtroom can close a case. It cannot erase what happened.

🔗 THE LEGAL SOURCE:
Under Section 154 of the South African Criminal Procedure Act (Act 51 of 1977), while courts can restrict certain information during a trial, the law explicitly states that restrictions do not prevent the publication of the name, charges, verdict, and sentence of an adult once the case is finalized.
Because the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court has officially convicted and sentenced this individual for GBH and strangulation, his identity and criminal conviction are verified matters of public record. Sharing these facts truthfully is fully legal and protected under South African public interest laws. #knowyourrights #capetownsouthafrica #capetownmagistratescourt #criminal #convict taken in Observatory, Western Cape, South Africa by @charli_candid

I thought the verdict would feel like an ending, instead I found myself standing in the wreckage of everything it took to get there. I need help now more than ever.
