I have been working on some carved framed works as well as a few canvases my show “House Party” next month with @richardhellergallery in Los Angeles . I’m looking forward for people to get a chance to them. It’s been such a chaotic and dark time outside it’s been rewarding to work on a group of paintings that riff on joys and wildness of family life .

Charlie Roberts, Rite of Spring, 2025

At just 15 × 15 cm, this watercolor holds a whole world. A giant daisy fills the frame, and on its petals ants, beetles, a bumblebee, a snail and a worm crawl over a sprawling figure in jeans. A skeleton rests in the lower petals. A ladder leads down into the flower’s golden centre. Behind it all, a city skyline fades into the blue.

The title nods to Stravinsky’s ballet of ritual and sacrifice. Roberts gives us spring as it really is: abundant, crowded, beautiful and a little unsettling, where life and decay share the same bloom.

Presented in a generous white mount and oak frame, the work asks you to step in close.

First shown in Copenhagen last year.
