HOUSE BY HOUSE | BATTALION 3

We’ve reached our final battalion in the House by House series. Battalion 3 covers 26.86 square miles west and northwest of center city.

Firehouses 2, 10, 12, 13 and 43 make up the battalion, with Battalion Chief 3 responding from Firehouse 10. The area includes a significant concentration of heavy and light industrial properties, including many of Charlotte’s tank farms and hazardous materials facilities. Interstates 77, 85 and 485, along with the Brookshire Freeway, are major transportation corridors through the battalion.

Our first stop is Firehouse 2, known as “Deuces Wild.”

Firehouse 2 moved into its current location in 1982, its third home since 1905. Its 3.76-square-mile response area includes Dilworth, Wilmore, South End, Brookhill, Sedgefield and Selwyn Farm, serving approximately 30,000 residents and 16,000 households.

The area has changed dramatically over the years. Atherton Mill, which dates back to 1883, is now surrounded by dense residential, retail and transit-oriented development throughout South End.

In 2024, a tiller replaced the traditional ladder at Firehouse 2, providing greater maneuverability, storage capacity and versatility in one of Charlotte’s most rapidly changing neighborhoods.

During fiscal year 2025, crews from Firehouse 2 responded to more than 7,000 incidents.

Another day, another reminder of the work your Charlotte firefighters do to protect our community.

These images capture crews responding to an apartment fire on Widden Way, where firefighters worked to bring the fire under control and protect lives and property. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

Behind every emergency response are firefighters working together, relying on their training, experience and one another to get the job done. Whether it’s a house fire, an apartment complex or any of the countless emergencies across our city, that commitment never changes.

For your Charlotte firefighters, it’s about being ready when the call comes and delivering excellent service every day. by @charlottefire

For 25 years, Rahsarn “Rock” Jones served Charlotte with a deep sense of responsibility to the people and neighborhoods that helped shape him.

His career was influenced early by Sept. 11, 2001, a day that made him confront the reality of the profession he was preparing to enter. Twenty-five years later, he chose Sept. 11 as the day to close that chapter of his life, surrounded by the people who helped him along the way.

Now retired and honored as Charlotte Fire’s Firefighter of the Year, Jones reflects on the community he calls home, the difficult calls that stayed with him, the firefighters who guided him and the principle he tried to carry into every response: treat people like family.

From payroll and benefits to retirement and some of life’s most difficult moments, Adams built a career on patience, compassion and a simple belief: treat people the way you want to be treated.

Now, after 32 years of service connected to Charlotte firefighters, she is the first recipient of Charlotte Fire’s Civilian Lifetime Achievement Award.

Her story is about far more than longevity. It is about the trust she earned, the people she helped and the quiet impact of a career spent taking care of others.

This morning, Charlotte Fire was honored to welcome a special tribute to America’s fallen firefighters at Firehouse 1, bringing together members of the fire service and our community to recognize those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Ahead of today’s Blue Cross NC 300, the No. 2 Whelen Chevrolet made a special stop at our firehouse, carrying the names of 204 firefighters honored by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF). Behind every name is a life dedicated to serving others, a family forever changed and a legacy that deserves to be remembered.

The NFFF plays a vital role in preserving those legacies, supporting the families of fallen firefighters and working to prevent future line-of-duty deaths and injuries.

Charlotte Fire is proud to stand alongside the Foundation in that mission. We extend our appreciation to the NFFF, Whelen Engineering, Richard Childress Racing and driver Jesse Love for bringing this meaningful tribute to Firehouse 1 and helping ensure these 204 firefighters are never forgotten.

Their names are on the car. Their sacrifice remains in our hearts. by @charlottefire

CHARLOTTE FIRE PREPARES FOR POTENTIAL HURRICANE DEPLOYMENT

As the remnants of Hurricane Isaias bring heavy rain, strong winds and the threat of flooding to the Carolinas, 22 members of North Carolina Task Force 3 are preparing to answer the call if communities across the state need additional help.

Led by Charlotte Fire Captain Jerry Rodgers, the team is assembling at the Charlotte Fire Operations Center, preparing personnel, specialized equipment and resources for a potential deployment.

From swiftwater rescue teams and boats to urban search and rescue (USAR) and hazardous materials capabilities, the team is equipped to respond to a wide range of emergencies. The 22-member contingent also includes task force leadership, rescue team managers, planning personnel and technical information specialists who help coordinate complex rescue operations.

With significant rainfall expected across western North Carolina and the potential for flash flooding in the mountains, preparation is critical. Every piece of equipment, every specialized role and every hour of training contributes to the team’s ability to respond when called upon.

No deployment has been ordered at this time, but these Charlotte Fire members are preparing to mobilize at a moment’s notice.

It’s a commitment that extends well beyond the Queen City. When North Carolina communities need help, Charlotte Fire is ready to answer the call. by @charlottefire
