Don't be a joker! Playing Mahjong has a lot of rules that can be overwhelming. Here are 2 rules, and 1 strategy tip we wanted to share that we often see new players doing. It is a bit painful when we see experienced players calling discarded jokers but it happens!

Hope it helps mahj masters.

Looking to make new friends in Charlotte and play mahjong? Our goal for our open play isn’t simply to give you somewhere to play Mahjong for an evening. It’s to help you find the people you’ll want to play with again.

Join us! September 27 Mahjong Social at Legion Brewing SouthPark! It isn’t your typical open play, and that’s intentional.

We know walking into a Mahjong event alone can feel a little awkward. “Is this seat taken? Where should I sit? Am I going to be way too slow, or way too fast, for this table?”

We take that part away.

Before the event, we thoughtfully arrange seating based on each player’s experience and preferred pace, so when you arrive, your seat is already waiting for you. You’ll be playing alongside people who enjoy the game the way you do, making it much easier to relax, play and actually meet new people in Charlotte.

And unlike a typical $15 drop-in open play, your registration includes:

🀄️ Thoughtfully assigned seating
🥂 A social atmosphere designed for meeting new people
🍔 Sliders + snacks
🎁 Entry to win a gorgeous Oh My Mahjong tile set valued at $400

Coming solo? **Perfect.** Many of our players do.

📍 Legion Brewing | SouthPark, Charlotte
📅 Sunday, September 27
🎟️ Advance registration required

**Not your typical open play. Your table is waiting.** by @charlottemahjong

New to Mahjong? These are a few of the most common mistakes we see beginners make, and the good news is, they’re easy to fix!

A few small changes can make your Charleston stronger, help you protect valuable tiles and keep you from missing a joker exchange.

Save this for your next game, and send it to the friend who is learning Mahjong with you! Which one did you do when you first started playing?

I said what I said. The red flags were there. You just thought you could make it work.

Mahjong advice or dating advice? You decide.

One of the biggest Mahjong mistakes is committing to a hand too early. Keep your options open, watch what comes in, and know when it’s time to pivot.

Send this to your Mahjong group chat. You know who needs to hear it.

Mahjong tip
I always buy a few extra NMJL cards each year. It’s a great tip for hosting mahjong nights to always have a backup in case players forget their cards.
Better yet, because everyone at a table has to play on the same card, it allows us to rotate between card years to keep the game interesting. It’s fun to play old favorites!
Some cards are just too good to retire.
Do you keep your old Mahjong cards?
