From horses to motorcycles, Allison Reed’s college career took a sharp turn that led her to research at UNC Charlotte 💚⛏️and a double major in physics and math in the Klein College of Science. 🏇➡️🏍️ 🥽

“I love bikes because they’re fun but also because they are an amazing display of physics,” Reed said. “If a career in research doesn’t work out, I’d love to work in the motorcycle racing industry, designing new bikes and using physics to ensure optimal performance.” ✨🔭🏍️

What a busy week we had last week! Our department had a booth at #CLEO2024 and many of our grad students presented posters or gave talks at the conference.

Every Reading Day at the end of each semester, our department has a potluck for our Applied Physics and Optical Science graduate students. It's a nice chance to take a break from the end of semester chaos and intermingle with students from other labs as well as faculty in a more relaxed environment. We love seeing the diversity of our department on display in the form of cuisine as many faculty and students bring foods from their many cultures!

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate the end to yet another great semester together!

Thank you so much to everyone who came out for Mike Menzel's talk! It was great to see so many people from the astronomy and science community in Charlotte at the event and we hope to be able to host more events like this in the future. 🤟💚

Special thanks to both of our guest speakers, as well as the Charlotte Amateur Astronomers Club!

Join us on March 15th for a talk and discussion by Dr. Patrick Reinbold, a Senior Data Scientist at Lowes. Dr. Reinbold graduated from our department in 2016 with two bachelor's in Physics and Math and went on to do his PhD in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Since graduating, he has pivoted to data science and his talk will focus on that transition, what his day to day looks like as well as offer his own personal insight on how the skills one aquires by studying physics can be applied in different domains!

We look forward to seeing you there! taken in Grigg Hall by @charlottephysics
