I am a collection of contradictions.

I can be cautious and careless, sentimental and stubborn, hilarious and heartfelt.

I wonder why I repeat the same mistakes and marvel that they feel like discoveries, why I cannot sneeze without swearing or always shrink my favourite sweaters in the wash. Why I avoid calls because I hate talking on the phone, unless I am in the car, during which time nobody seems to answer.

A column about the strange, contradictory, utterly ordinary little things that make us who we are.

These are some of my quirks, my foibles and my idiosyncrasies. What are yours?

I went to Uluṟu searching for words. I came home speechless.

I had imagined the desert as a place of absence — a landscape pared back to stone and sky, dust and silence. Instead, it was overflowing. Rain pooling in the bright red earth. Wildflowers blooming in the dust. Birds flashing through the trees. Wind moving through the spinifex. Stories written into rock, river and land.

So I did what writers do: I began gathering words. Turning things over. Naming what I could. Trying to make shape of the feeling, believing that if I found the right words, I might somehow hold the moment still.

But some moments refuse to be held.

Some experiences leave us so full of feeling that language falls away altogether.

And perhaps that is what silence is sometimes: not an absence of words, but an abundance of meaning.

One week in the life of the little supper club that could.

There’s something miraculous about watching something you created in the depths of your darkest days become something so full of light.

Grateful to @littleflowerssydney for the pops of colour, @bed.threads for the linens and to joy, for returning.

Romance is dead.

We have never had more ways to find each other, and never been further from romance.

We swipe, screen and search, stripping away the mystery before we’ve had the chance to wonder.

My latest column is about my distaste for dating apps, and my longing for something gloriously old-fashioned. Perhaps I am a prude, but I miss the romance of being courted, rather than curated.

What if the lives we didn’t choose never really disappear?

A missed train. A different decision. A door that closed before we knew what was on the other side.

Watching Sliding Doors made me wonder about all the lives that might have been — and the people who belong to them.

Lately, some old doors have opened again. Familiar faces, entirely different lives. The strange possibility of meeting someone twice: once as who you were, and again as who you’ve become.

In this week’s column, I write about parallel lives, missed chances, old lovers, the versions of ourselves we’ll never meet. And why sometimes, you have to turn away from the life you can only see through glass — the life that might have been — and have the courage to walk through the door that is wide open for you now.

A winter of going inward, though somehow my world kept opening.

Abundance Street. There were skinny dips beneath a full moon and others in broad daylight. Seals surfacing at sunrise. Invitations to dinner parties and afternoons spent slowly stirring. Conversations with crows and marvelling at the kindness of gifted kangaroo paw. Walking. Writing. Walking. Writing.

There were snakes in the grass, sweet peas in jars and wishes made on dandelions. Hikes through the desert, red earth finally beneath my feet and dollops of spinifex brushing my hands. Five national parks. Adventures that appeared simply because I kept saying yes. Water so cold it stole my breath and conversations so warm, they stole it too.

These film photographs are black and white, but this season has been technicolour.

A reminder to always trade your cow for a handful of magic beans.

We are made in the middle.

The beginning is promise. The ending is proof. But the middle is where the real work happens — it is where projects stall, motivation fades, relationships are tested and we learn to keep going without any guarantees.

At the beginning of this year, I kept telling myself: just make it to the middle of the year.

Now I understand why.

The middle wasn’t something to survive. It was where I began to see clearly. Where joy returned. Where I found my appetite, my laughter, my energy — and, ultimately, myself.

INTRODUCING SUPPER STORIES
For the past few years, I’ve been looking for a home for my supper club.
Somewhere that understood what I believe about gathering: that vulnerability is a superpower, that food can be a love language, and that sitting around a table with strangers is one of the oldest, simplest ways we have of feeling a little less alone.

I wanted somewhere with a history, where stories were already woven into its walls. Somewhere warm and curious that conjured a little bit of magic. And now, finally, I’ve found it at @gertrudeandalice, with Jane, Kate and Jordan.

Once a month, on a Friday night, we’ll gather in their beautiful family bookstore — surrounded by words, passing plates from hand to hand, and making room for stories to find their way into the conversation.

Each supper will offer a theme to write to: a small doorway into memory, feeling and imagination, and an invitation to share a story of your own. Because food and stories have always belonged together.

It feels like a homecoming.

Tickets are released this Friday at 9:30am. Subscribe to the Gertrude & Alice Substack to be the first to know — link in my bio.

Come alone.
Come hungry.
Come open.

There will be a seat at the table for you.

Because every memorable meal begins with a story.

Throwing caution to the wind.

Which is another way of saying I had run out of reasons not to.

My Editor joked that we’d call this column “In Which Charlotte Has a One Night Stand”. I called it “Say Yes to Life”.

Because the interesting thing about the dark is very rarely what happens in it. It is the person you discover there, the version of you that has been waiting to let the light in.

Terrifying. Exhilarating. Unmapped. Unapologetic. Just instinct, and whichever direction pulls strongest.

Perhaps that is what saying yes to life means: not knowing what it will cost, only that you are suddenly unwilling to remain untouched by it.

Sometimes the greatest gift of country life isn’t the peace and quiet. It’s the perspective.

I left my country roots chasing the city. Years later, I find myself returning. Not to escape, but to remember what really matters.

My latest column is about country air, wide open spaces, and the mysterious way home always has a habit of finding us.
