A TRUE CHARLESTON TREASURE: SWEETGRASS BASKETS

With more than 50 resident Gullah artisans, the Charleston City Market is the epicenter of contemporary sweetgrass basketry.

For more than 300 years, people in Charleston have been weaving baskets using locally harvested bulrush, a strong yet supple marshgrass that thrives in the sandy soil of the Lowcountry.

Originally used as winnowing fans to separate the rice seed from its chaff, sweetgrass baskets are regarded among the nation’s most prized cultural objects.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum’s permanent collection includes a sweetgrass basket made by Mary Jackson, whose finely detailed, sculptural baskets first appeared at the Charleston City Market in 1980.

The Day Market stretches from Meeting to East Bay streets and encompasses four city blocks. Every day, 300 local vendors set up shop throughout the Market’s one enclosed building and three open-air sheds.

Begin your visit in front of Market Hall at the intersection of Meeting and Market Streets. Built in 1841, the Greek Revival-style Market Hall is easily identified by its vivid use of brownstone stucco, red sandstone, and green ironwork. A United States National Register Landmark of the “highest architectural design quality,” the building features one enclosed story atop a rusticated ground-level arcade, through which visitors access the Charleston City Market’s Great Hall.

The eclectic, revolving, and evolving wares found at the Charleston City Market create a fun and exciting shopping atmosphere that keeps both visitors and natives returning to peruse the new items every few months or so.

From sweetgrass baskets to bags of stone ground grits—and thousands of products in between, the Charleston City Market buzzes with people perusing stalls filled with iconic, rare, and unexpected products.
