Proof of life. Rainbows have been finding me lately, alongside butterflies that float purposefully above my head. August was about looking to the sky to find some kind of expansiveness that’s been elusive here on the ground. I found the beach I’ve been longing for all summer and hadn’t yet gotten. And then a most amazing experience at a communal table with amazing food and friends new and old with @yeovilledinnerclub. I’ve not observed in many years now but Shana Tova to all who do. In this Jewish New Year, I’m thinking a bunch about where to begin fresh and how to pull the threads forward from the last year that I’d like to keep. Reclaiming. Reimagining. Releasing my tight grip on all I can’t control and remembering how to come back to myself over and over again. May I never leave. by @chasinggarza

I remember sitting in her beautiful home, on her couch, her with her cup of tea and me not believing really that I was sitting with Gloria, on her couch. We’d talked on the phone prior to my first visit, and she asked me so many questions about the movement with awe, humility, and curiosity. That was her way. She was a great listener, humble, gracious and yet fierce. She was an early and consistent supporter of our work, of us as humans. She was a trailblazer, encouraged us all to be more audacious in our pursuit of freedom for all of us. We’re losing so many of our giants, and they are calling us to step up and lead — they believed we are giants too. Rest well, dear one. You did us proud. Thank you for the way you showed us how to build community, how to hold difference and still love and support each other in the fight. Thank you for the ferocious way you believed in us. We will carry you in our hearts always @gloriasteinem. Always. by @chasinggarza

Closed a chapter this week and turned a corner, cleaning out my parents home and getting it ready to be sold. I’ve been avoiding it in one way or another for close to three years. After both parents died I think I just had responsibility fatigue or something. Plus grief. And now it’s done. Got some snips of my mamas lemon tree too before saying goodbye to them and that phase. I’m overwhelmed with gratitude and reminded that even though I’m really kinda terrible at asking for help the people who love me know that about me and show the fuk up any way. And especially grateful that this no longer has to occupy my mind or heart as a thing I’m avoiding but know I have to do. Shout out to in n out burgers, Bay Area sunsets and skies, and Oakland tumbleweave 😂 IYKYK. Miss you and will be back soon 🫶🏾 by @chasinggarza

August finna wrap up soon and I can’t even tell you where the time went. Been spending lots of time in the sky — gazing at clouds or being in them, sunsets and sunrises. If there was anything prolific at all to say about this month it would be about the power of sisterhood and in particular it would be about the amazing brilliant and radiant Black women in my life. Only by Gods grace was I born a Black woman and for that I will be forever grateful 🫶🏾 by @chasinggarza

Black journalists have always done more than report the story. They’ve helped us understand the forces shaping our lives, challenged the stories that power tells about itself, and pushed issues of race and justice into the national conversation.

At a moment when journalism itself is under attack—and when Black journalists and Black institutions are facing particular pressure—the question isn’t simply how we protect our presence. It’s how we turn that presence into power: the power to shape narratives, hold institutions accountable, reach our communities, and help build a path forward.

Looking forward to digging into all of this with @chasinggarza at #NABJATL, through the lens of my book ‘From Presence to Power.’

Join us Saturday, August 15 at 11:30 AM on the Lobby Level. Come through.
