I spent most of my life wishing I could create. I knew it was within me, and that the only thing holding me back was the ideal of perfection.

"I know what it should look like, but how do I do that?"

"I haven't played with that medium before, it's probably harder than it looks."

"What if it fails?"

My turning point came about very recently when I realised that all of the questions and challenges I'd thrown up were actually most of the fun. The how's and whys. The problem-solving, the journey. The love that goes into each piece that is destined for another. Nothing fails anymore. When a plan goes awry, it is either a beautiful piece of uniqueness, or a lesson to carry forward. I find immense joy in making things that I have no idea how to make. The resulting art is actually quite secondary. This is just a selection of my whimsy over the past year and a bit.

In order:

8. TV bench made from Cedar and Walnut offcuts

Magic is everywhere,
Winter is a state of mind.
When the light is there,
Leave your worries behind.
When it rests and hides,
Allow your own to shine.
Life is not meant to be taken in great strides,
To breathe deep is to touch the divine.

Went for the most transcendent walk of my life yesterday.

After forging my way well off the beaten track, I stumbled across an incredibly powerful natural wind tunnel. Loomed over by the salt-scarred cliffs behind and affording a breathtaking view of the surrounding plains and waterways, I found a spire of rock to dance on.

Directly in the path of the howling gale, a significant drop on every side, with not another soul around for miles, I challenged Nature to a dance-off with the stupidest grin you'll ever see.

I was there for quite some time. taken in Whatipu by @chass_tised
