How does Hatch design a house that emerges from the land?

This is the process behind the Sacred Rock House, one of six homes envisioned for an undisclosed wellness resort in the mountains outside San Diego.

Each house is conceived as a distinct response to site, climate, and the layered microclimates that shape Southern California. Together, they explore how architecture can draw us into closer relationship with the natural world, deepen our awareness of self, and invite a way of living that feels grounded, reciprocal, and alive.

The larger vision is centered on longevity, understood not simply as duration, but as presence, meaning, and connection.

For me, design begins in uncharted territory. The path is rarely clear at the outset. It is discovered gradually through sketching, testing, and listening, until the work reveals its form.

We’re humbled and grateful to share that Ílios Residence has been published in AD Middle East.

Named for the Greek word for sun, Ílios reimagines a 1980s Southern California residence as a contemporary expression of Greek and Armenian heritage, shaped by light, proportion, material restraint, and an elliptical oculus that traces the movement of the sun throughout the day.

PALM PROMONTORY
La Quinta, California

A promontory is a point of elevated land reaching into an open landscape. Here, it becomes a place of refuge among palms, overlooking water and the mountains beyond.

Charcoal walls become one with the shadows beneath a canopy shaped by light, gardens and daily life. Openings gather the sky and let trees rise through the roof. Water traces the edge of the land, carrying the eye toward the horizon.

Within, the canopy folds closer, sheltering the quiet rituals of bathing and rest.

Architecture, interiors and landscape conceived as one.

Mountain Ridge House begins with a simple idea: let the land draw the plan.

Following the natural arc of the ridge, the residence gathers around a central landscape and opens outward toward the valley beyond.

One of six homes in a 700 acre regenerative cattle ranch and retreat centered on wellness and longevity in the mountains of San Diego County.

Deep in the mountains above Vals, Switzerland, I left my phone at the hotel, sat in silence, and watched the first light move across the valley.

The slope was so steep that sitting still became almost unbearable. Maybe that was part of it: to stay until the discomfort was no longer the loudest thing.

For a moment, there was nothing to solve and nowhere else to be. Just the landscape, the light, and a little more clarity.

Inspired by the rhythms of Biscayne Bay, shifting light on water, and the lush density of tropical landscape, this house is shaped by its surroundings.

Designed as an immersive art gallery, the home unfolds in a U-shape around a central garden, framing a layered experience of art, water, landscape, and skyline.

From morning light in the east to sunsets over Miami in the west, the architecture transforms with the day.
