It's Friday! Time to post some more photos of the best Friday of the year - #whitfriday!

Whit Friday wouldn't be Whit Friday without Chav Brass. We caught them at Greenfield this year and we still can't get their rendition of Golden out of our heads! by @chavbrass

Whit Friday - for the uninitiated - is described as “the greatest free show on earth.” It’s a brass band competition so wonderfully chaotic that you probably couldn’t invent it if you tried. A peculiarity of the North West, and especially the villages of Saddleworth, it’s woven into the identity of the area.

It’s where my mum grew up, where my cousins still live, and an event my grandma absolutely adored. I’d never been myself, but I’d grown up hearing stories about it. And I can honestly say…it didn’t disappoint.

I spent the day travelling around with Chav Brass, a much-loved fixture of the competition. In village after village, crowds packed the streets nestled between the moors, chanting and cheering as if Beyoncé herself had arrived.

The whole thing is a glorious mad dash. Bands race from village to village, coaches squeeze along roads that seem barely wide enough to take them, and everyone is trying to fit in as many contests as possible before the night is over.

At one point I asked why they didn’t simply timetable the competition to accommodate the hundreds of bands taking part? The response was immediate.

‘Well what would be the fun in that?’

Fair point.
