It is estimated that this Douglass for tree is 800 years old. That means it sprouted around the same time the Magna Carta was signed in England, and the same time Genghis Kahn’s conquests began. Seems a while ago. Lots of people have climbed around in the tree. It is requested that people no longer do so. I complied. by @chbard

One proud day a couple years ago. 40 years of steady effort. Awarded 5th degree black belt Master status in Tae Kwon Do old school ITF style from Grand Master Chaanine. He doesn’t hand them out easy. I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. Plenty of bumps and bruises. A few broken bones. Several concussions. Some gold medals. Some great friends. It has been a journey worth taking. by @chbard

1979 proud employee of the Coronado Chart House. Surf in the day, work at night. Get off around midnight or one in the morning, get some sleep, then dawn patrol and surf no matter what, good, bad or ugly. Eat, take nap, back to work all summer long. Picked up this job taking down a dying big leaf maple. The trunk had an internal crack. As I took weight off the top piece by piece the crack would occasionally groan as it shifted. Eventually enough weight was out and it shut up. Next time I will wrap a chain around the trunk for a little extra piece of mind. Risk is calculated. You have to decide what you think is reasonable. by @chbard

Managed a clean on sight flash lead of this intimidating Murin Park crack climb. I had seen this a couple times in years past but kept on walking. We arrived and Scott said “You will need the whole rack for this one.” We had been swinging leads and it was in fact my turn. Glad for the little push of encouragement. I had a real battle on this steep corner. Went into the chimney and wedged in there and had a good rest. Cruised to the anchors. Photo by Pattti. by @chbard
