I made a few last changes to The Artist prior to its recent showing in "The Ideology of Revolution" at ArtWRKD in Newtown, PA. This is the ABSOLUTE final version. 7 years in the making! Let me know if you can spot the changes and what you think!

Artist Statement

I approach painting conceptually, with each body of work determining its own visual language rather than adhering to a fixed style. The manner of painting operates in tandem with the subject matter, shaping meaning as much as image. Drawing from the histories of both art and America, I use historical forms to engage contemporary experience, allowing past and present to collapse together. Within this framework, each painting becomes a kind of self-portrait, shaped by my position within the structures of race, power, and consumption that have defined American history.

The role of the artist is another recurring concern. Figures from colonial and frontier life appear in precarious balance. Some carry logs on their heads, suggesting both labor and the weight of history. In one major painting, a seventeenth-century artist paints undisturbed in a barnyard while chaos unfolds beyond the fence. Yet even within that apparent separation, he paints an emblem of death.

Humor and surrealism run throughout the work, creating points of entry while disrupting easy interpretation. The paintings do not seek resolution so much as they hold contradiction and uncertainty.

I hope they produce a shared sense of strangeness and estrangement—an awareness of the limits of understanding and the difficulty of being human.

The Ideology of Revolution
Opening Reception July 3rd 6pm - 9pm
On View July 3rd to August 9th

The Ideology of Revolution examines the belief systems that underpin revolutionary movements and the enduring human pursuit of radical societal change.

Revolutionary ideology advocates for liberty, equality, and the rights of individuals, often challenging established authority and promoting popular sovereignty.

It inspires collective action and envisions new social orders—reshaping political and cultural landscapes during moments of upheaval.

This exhibition invites artists to explore:

-Liberty and equality
-Collective power and popular sovereignty
-Resistance to authority
-Social justice and systemic change
The tension between utopian vision and lived reality

From historic revolutions to contemporary movements, artists were encouraged to interrogate the principles that ignite transformation.

What does freedom truly mean? Who defines equality? How are revolutionary ideals sustained, compromised, or reimagined?

Join us.
