What is safe sleep? Health experts recommend that infants sleep alone, on their back, in a crib or pack-and-play with a firm mattress and fitted sheet. The sleep area should be free of loose items such as blankets, pillows, bumper pads, or toys. For at least the first six months, babies should always sleep in a smoke-free environment and in the parents’ room, but not in their bed. To keep infants warm safely, use a sleep sack instead of blankets.
