Mohali has got its new Mayor! 🏛️Sarabjit Singh Samana, son of Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh, was elected as the Mayor of the Mohali Municipal Corporation on Tuesday. Along with him, Rajinder Parshad was elected as Senior Deputy Mayor and Harpal Singh Channa as Deputy Mayor.The elections were held at the Municipal Corporation office, where all 50 newly elected councillors were administered the oath of office. AAP candidates secured support from 35 councillors, including the party’s 27 elected councillors, helping them win all three top positions.Punjab Cabinet Minister and AAP State President Aman Arora congratulated the newly elected leadership and said Mohali would be developed as a model city. He expressed confidence that the new team would work towards improving civic services and accelerating development across the city.Celebrations erupted outside the MC office after the results were announced, with party workers dancing to the beat of dhol and taking out a victory procession. Drivers associated with Ola, Uber and other app-based cab platforms have launched a protest across Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, disrupting services for thousands of daily commuters. The strike will continue till June 16, with drivers refusing ride bookings between 10 AM and 4 PM each day.The protest is centred around the alleged non-implementation of Chandigarh’s Aggregator Policy 2025, which was introduced to regulate app-based taxi services, fare structures, driver welfare and passenger safety. Drivers claim the policy was notified nearly a year ago but has yet to be enforced on the ground.Another major demand is a fare revision. Cab operators argue that rising fuel, CNG, insurance, maintenance and permit costs have made the current fare structure unsustainable. They are demanding an increase in fares from ₹25 per kilometre to ₹35 per kilometre and have also raised concerns about high commissions charged by aggregator platforms.With cab availability reduced, commuters are expected to rely more on CTU buses, auto-rickshaws and carpooling options. A large group of animal lovers gathered in Sector 17, Chandigarh, to protest against Punjab Government’s recent stray dog management measures. Protesters demanded a compassionate, scientific and legally sustainable approach to address concerns related to community dogs across the state.Former MLA Navjot Kaur Sidhu also joined the demonstration and criticised the government’s approach, stating that all stakeholders should be consulted before implementing major decisions affecting stray animals. Protesters later submitted a memorandum to the Punjab Chief Minister highlighting their concerns.The memorandum stressed that dog bite incidents and rabies prevention are important issues but argued that solutions should focus on proper implementation of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2023.
