Caring deeply about a performance is not the problem. Disappointment is human.

But when one mistake leaves an athlete unable to function for the rest of the day, Coach Becky Acra says the adults around that athlete need to look honestly at the message being carried backstage.

High expectations can build athletes. Adult fear, urgency and identity can bury them.

Before you correct the skill, connect with the athlete

Coach Becky Acra starts with questions: How was your day? Where are you from 1–10? What happened before practice? The athlete sitting at a four or five may not need more pressure. They may need to be seen
