This is my recent project for school that’s like 1/3 complete. It was an incredibly open prompt we just had to submit a 3 minute video it could be any medium any subject any idea. We had 6 weeks to develop the piece and I was so overwhelmed by the freedom in the project. I probably wasted a week and a half before I watched the Chernobyl TV show and remembered learning about this situation in relation to the name Virchow. I started to look it back up and read a bit on exactly what Rudolf Virchow did and I was very interested. I didn’t dive too deep into his publications except for the lecture series text, Cellular Pathology, where I found much interest in the idea he structures that we can gather information and events within a single cell and translate it to the collective and individual behavior of humans. I especially was drawn to a quote Contagion from the Harvard Libraries pulled, inciting that Virchow connects the biological with political, describing the human body as a β€œcellular democracy”. I was inspired by this concept to make my piece focus on the idea that humans often struggle constantly with creating this idea of comfort and stability through material means or societal expectations, but often forget our ability as humans of self awareness. Even though there’s this choice in the consciousness, a collective societal pathway is sort of engraved for the individual to play out almost subconsciously. I chose to use this form of a 8 sided Mandelbrot set because it’s the β€œseahorse valley” region that’s the main between the cardioid and outer bulbs of a fractal. I say this because the organs of the human body that configure these patterns are ones like the lungs and blood vessels. Considering other examples as well, functions and behaviors within our real world that mimic this region of fractals always are moving the fastest. I think about this in a sense that the functions within the β€œseahorse valley” region have the quickest-every-possible-moment kind of behavior. by @cheesylanka

Yesterday I was able to visit and photograph Buxton on Cape Hatteras where dozens of homes have been swept away by the ocean within the past few weeks. The consecutive storms have caused an old Navy/Coast guard base infrastructure to become exposed, this has created petroleum sheens in the water and chemical pollution in the air. This mass destruction and pollution has created a wildlife graveyard amongst the shoreline along with the corroding homes. by @cheesylanka
