Blessed to have walked in to Art Institute Culinary Kitchen 30 years ago and sit next to this guy! It was the start of a journey that has taken me places, met so many great people and allowed me to take care of a loving family. I rode shotgun on so many farm trips way before @urbanharvesthouston was as amazing source as it is today. I know I would not be the chef and man I am today without him. Love being your co-pilot all those days. taken in Healdsburg, California by @chefevans

Yesterday marks 19 years since @graciecavnar started @r4sfoundation. That spark of an idea we had in 2005 for what we could do to help improve children’s health has revolutionized how thousands of kids understand, appreciate, and eat by introducing them to their food from seed to plate and empowering them with critical life skills. In the beginning, we enlisted the expertise of our city’s finest chefs to help us craft and test a robust curriculum that has measurably transformed children’s attitudes and behaviors toward healthy eating. These chefs and many more across the country have helped us make healthy food not just nutritious but also delicious, fun, and accessible. Together, we are shaping the next generation of food consumers, empowering them with the knowledge and skills to lead healthy lives.

Over the last nineteen years, we have impacted thousands of children and families nationwide and in Houston, accomplishing measurable change in child behavior, knowledge, and attitudes. We continue to grow, making our programs easier for families to access and reaching more people of all ages. Now, our Seed-to-Plate Nutrition Education™ is in more schools; we have professional training-—both in-person and online, for schoolteachers and aspirational urban farmers; and a mobile VegOut! app taking our healthy eating message global. And we have Hope Farms Urban Agricultural Showcase and Training Center, a bucolic gathering place in the heart of Houston where we grow healthy, affordable food, offer a weekly market, train a new generation of urban farmers, and deliver our Seed-to-Plate cooking and gardening classes to children and adults of all ages, students on field trips and even Scouts seeking badges. We provide more opportunities to connect kids and families to healthy eating each year and have begun working with companies to incorporate food literacy into corporate team-building programs. We are changing lives, and the chefs are still by our side.
