20 years.
That’s a long fucking time. Almost half my life. We’ve both had more years together than either of us got to have with our moms. There’s something about realizing that that stops me in my tracks.
If I could go back and speak to my 25 year old self, what would I say? Would I tell her that shit was not going to be butterflies and rainbows? Would I tell her that she’d spend more years crying, angry and frustrated in this marriage than she would happy? Would I try to deter her because it would be a long fucking road before they’d experience the love they believed was within their reach?
I guess this question brings up so much of what I’ve been feeling lately. At times, I try to give my honest advice and lived experience to the people in my life with the hope that they’ll listen to me. With the hope that they’ll recognize that I’m giving them gold. With the hope that somehow they can bypass the pain and self destruction that I know all too well. With the hope that they can turn left and head straight toward the joy.
But what I’m finally realizing is that we can’t help someone jump to the end of the game. We can’t spare them from their inevitable journey with our words alone. People have to experience life for themselves. Some things can only be understood by living through them.
So what would I say to 25 year old me? I’d tell her to continue to trust herself and her instincts, because even if they lead her down a dark path, it can still be the right path.

Keep going.
Even if you think he will never change. Keep going.
Even if you think you will never change. Keep going.
Even if it feels like an ending, it could be just the beginning. Keep going.

Because every road bump will lead us closer to becoming exactly who we are meant to be for each other in the next stage of our lives.
Oh, and one more thing. This love is actually so much more powerful than you think it is. It’s worth every bit of effort it’s going to take to get there.

This Chicago style dog very tasty however what really stole the show for me was the Italian beef with giardinera! It was amazing!
