Have you seen the first 5 episodes of COMMON SIDE EFFECTS yet?!

Let me give an overview, without spoiling it: A familiar character (basically @paulstamets in an alternate universe) finds a long sought-after mushroom that no one actually believed was real with the power to heal everything… including the planet…

So far, in this universe, no one has discovered a myco-panacea for ALL ailments, though there is a reason the Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum, et al) is known as “the mushroom of immortality” and whose Hanzi mean “shaman praying for rain.” Mushroom medicine has barely even begun to emerge on the world stage.

But here in Souther Mexico, the use of mushrooms as medicine is as natural as the forest itself. Utilizing what is available and abundant is both obvious and a long-developed natural wisdom. Our trips are filling up, so don’t wait! Take a break from@the madness and join us this summer to dive into mushroom medicine, forest activism and learn and differentiate way of being!

So what are you waiting for?! Watch Common Side Effects (@commonsideeffectshq), get excited about mushroom medicine, and then hop on our trips with some of the most knowledgeable mushroom communities on earth this summer!!

What an absolutely fantastic day on Huitepec in San Cristobal. Foraging groups are always fun, but this particular group, mostly coming for the textile urges, was particularly fun yesterday, as so much of what mycologist Ezequiel Cruz (@_.ezequielcruz._), mushroom dye master Alissa Allen (@mycopigments) shared was brand new information for them.

The colors of the mushrooms reflect the colors of this gorgeous Mexican state of chiapas: vibrant reds, purples, impossible combinations of muted green caps and too-bright-to-stare yellow pore surfaces.

For all you neeerds, the day was dominated by Cortinarius and Boletaceae species, the two of these families together yielding upwards of 50 specimens… this included at least four species of the precious Dyers Cortinarius, a rare mushroom that exudes delight and joy when finding even one, and yesterday we found several and left several babies to grow larger!

This is day one of three days for foraging, and we are stoked to search again today at Montetik, where Kim left a couple dyers polypore babies about a week ago… we shall see the progress!

Just over a week ago, we took our MycoChiapas group up to Huitepec, the ancient water volcano that towers above the Chiapas highlands, to explore the fungi there. Though we didn’t leave with a ton of any one thing, we didn’t manage to pull 133 species out of the duff and dirt in our 4 hour exploration! Check out the last two photos for a teaser of what we found (the formatting cut off some of the image, sorry!!).

Today, we head back up the mountain with our MyColores mushroom dye group! I cannot wait to see what has changed, what has grown, and what else we find with our guide and mycologist Ezequiel Cruz, Msc. to see what we find just a little over a week of rain later!! Stay tuned!

We kicked off our first MyColores in Chiapas last night with an epic group of ladies, and a couple of Mushroom(dye)-adjacent partners with one of the best meals in the city: Tarumba (@tarumba.mx) and a simply gorgeous and delicious display of traditional ingredients reimagined, from hard-shell duck tacos to an over-the-top local cheese plate, cocktails with mumo and zucú (otherwise known as Hoja Santa and Chicatanaas!), delicious fish dishes at 7200ft elevation… wow.🤩

We are so excited to be hosting Alissa Allen for her 5th year in a row in Mexico to explore the mycopigments of chiapas (@mycopigments).

The Fungivore just wrapped up our MycoChiapas event with one of the best groups ever! What an amazing experience. And we could not have done it without our local partner Fungaria (@_fungaria_) and astounding mycologist Ezequiel Cruz (@_.ezequielcruz._ )! Laying out the species we’d found on a table to talk about each of our finds, Ezequiel created these digital images with the names of our finds (to the best of his up-to-date knowledge) and wow.

May I present the first of 6 days of foraging in this way, and the day we collected both the least specimens, but also had the most unique day, with one single overlapping species from the Nagaño forests of Tuxtla Gutiérrez!

The rains were late to southern Mexico. September was quite bereft of mushrooms. But we are back, baby! The torrential downpours of late September and early October have brought a bounty of beautiful mushrooms. We have been piloting our incredible MycoChiapas adventure and somehow are just two days from@the finish line, already! Here are some teaser shots while I organize the massive volume of photos of people and mushrooms and funny bugs.

Hokkaido!!!

That was an absolutely grueling 27 hours of travel (after 12 hours of scrambling to figure out what went wrong… most of it in Bangkok airport) lounges after Typhoon Saudel cancelled a ton of flights in SE Asia and delayed ours by 13 hours…

But we did it! We can confidently say we know how to navigate the Osaka Airport (and a portion of the city); and how to get bag weights right, store luggage in Osaka International, and buy cheap coffee with only coins from a vending machine because Japan…

Zackbarely slept because “big guy in a tiny plane” … with lots of Typhoon inspired turbulence and What the doing hell is this black box under his seat taking all of his meager legroom (last photo)… no! Engineers should have to ride on the planes they design. What the actual flock is this garbage version of reality?

But anyway, we made it! We rented a car! We are in Otaru! We ate Crab Miso and delicious Ahi Sashimi, drank our fill of sake and beer (Sapporo of course). And now somehow still awake (it’s 10:51pm on August 26th, for us!) with a bottle of delicious sake from the local bottle shop and our cute hotel room where we get our own beds abs the toilet talks to you and the shower water is instantly hot…

Big things coming. I still owe y’all a bunch of Thailand posts because that adventure was one for the books! But in the meantime… watashitachiwa nihongo sucochi wakarimas.

Dang Chiang Mai. That was too quick a visit, and yet we managed to do and see so much (and EAT so much!!) is such a short time.

It is wild to have such glorious feelings of home in a foreign country, and to miss it so much already:

We are coming back!! See you soon!

MycoThailand: Chiang Mai - Another jungle hike, another collection of wild fungal diversity. Not all the pictures are perfect, excuse my absolutely soaking phone and hands… so much moistness… good lord it’s wet here. lol. And this is not all the pictures, so ask if you see something that sparks your curiosity. We certainly did!!

Special thanks to @ichiangdao for a fantastic adventure and hike and for his enthusiasm, as well as his amazing guides from the community, and their knowledge of edible mushrooms. Just awesome!

I promise there are more in depth posts coming, but for now, here are some nice mushrooms to look at.
