What a great week for the community in DC. 🀄

Kicked off by with the Mid Autumn Festival Celebration in Chinatown Park with over 1000 people coming to celebrate our heritage with of course @samasamaart @lestalusan. That headed straight into Lucky Danger hosting the Committee of 100’s Welcome Dinner, and of course mahjong. 60 members and Next Generation Leaders took over the whole restaurant to welcome everyone to DC.

Monday we celebrated Anla Cheng over lunch to recognize her work and introduce the Janet Yang endowment. The events concluded with C100 Awards Gala at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. The night honored Chinese American and Asian American leadership, with honorees including Ang Lee. It was a room full of people who’ve spent their lives making room for the next generation of Chinese American leaders making sure we continue to have a voice and representation EVERYWHERE.

It was so great seeing so many members of our community together all week, some coming from across the country and some from right down the block. Chinatown was full, the city showed up, and old friends and new ones were all at the same table.

Thank you Paul and the entire C100 team for hosting!

I had such a fun time during @_luckydanger’s weekly Mahjong Nights! They have a few spots left for their Hong Kong & American style lessons - grab your ticket ASAP #hosted

Last Tuesday, @pootie_ting and I learned how to play Hong Kong style Mahjong and were treated to a lovely dinner afterwards. I love Lucky Danger so much - it’s a place that honors the American-Chinese experience of growing up in the US and serves fusion cuisine that is thoughtful and wonderful. This restaurant is the brainchild of @cheftimma and is the beginning of a Chinatown DC revival that includes folks of Chinese descent!

More about the menu to come but at this point, I’ve tried half of the menu and loved every bite. My must gets are the crab lo mein, crab rangoons, and chongqing chicken 🔥 Check out their lunch and pre-theatre menus for some dining deals

Full circle moment. Being born in Arkansas, I never imagined I’d be standing next to President and Secretary Clinton. Grateful to my friend Carolyn Wu, @clintonglobal and @wckitchen for making this week possible. 🙏

When I was a kid there, a brick came through my window just because of the way I looked. Rocks were thrown at me on my way to kindergarten. Those moments have stayed with me. They’re a big part of why I tell the story of being Chinese in America, and why Chinatowns, and the communities they hold in every city, are still so important. But they are dying.

This week I was lucky enough to represent DC’s Chinatown and @lionspathdc at the Clinton Global Initiative. I spent the time being inspired by leaders and organizers in every arena, seeing how a small thought can become a big idea. Chinatowns are one of those big ideas that need help, and I feel so hopeful that we have leaders ready for it.

Alongside it, we’re pouring Palomas Mensajeras Alto (@mezcalpalomasmensajeras) from Oponguio, Michoacán, a clay pot-distilled mezcal from fourth-generation mezcalero Miguel Perez Resendiz, with bright citrus, fresh allium, earthy chiles, and a mineral finish that feels right at home with the taco.

The end of an era. Two bikes, six years, both stolen, last one this morning. If you know me, it’s my main mode of transportation. Almost died on this bike. RIP. If you see someone riding it around DC, throw some frozen dumplings at them for me. Oh and that time we rode it through the Line Hotel. by @cheftimma

Thank you to @theatlantic and Ashley Parker for interviewing @cheftimma for the piece, “My Descent Into Mah-Jongg.”

The story dives into the current mah-jongg boom, its deep cultural roots, and the way the game has taken on new life across communities, friend groups, tournaments, and dining rooms. Tim shared his perspective on the Americanization of mah-jongg, the traditions he grew up with, and how Lucky Danger’s hidden mah-jongg parlor has become a place to learn, gather, and keep the click-clack of the tiles going.

At Lucky Danger, Tim and his father, Mr. Tim Ma Sr. (@mahjong_yeye), teach the Taiwanese and Chinese versions of the game, bringing people together around the table the way mah-jongg has for generations.
