For the past three decades, Malian architect and designer Cheick Diallo has redefined the possibilities for African design. Driven by curiosity and civic engagement, he regards Bamako’s streets and markets as his laboratories, often briefing and crafting works with manufacturers on the spot. He has instigated cross-disciplinary collaborations between Mali’s traditionally stratified trades, bringing leather tanners together with metalworkers to make furniture, and Tuareg jewellers with ebony carvers to make lamps and cutlery.

Currently on view at Southern Guild Los Angeles, his first solo in the US, ‘Taama’ (“voyage”), traces the trajectory of his pioneering design practice and showcases the full range of his oeuvre, including a selection of iconic and experimental furniture, lighting, sculpture and objects.

Southern Guild is proud to announce a major solo exhibition by Malian designer Cheick Diallo, titled ‘Taama’, at its Los Angeles gallery opening 13 February, 2025 (until 3 May, 2025). Diallo’s first solo exhibition in the United States, ‘Taama’ (“voyage”) will showcase the full range of Diallo’s work, including iconic and experimental furniture, lighting, sculpture and objects.

Over the course of his three decades-long career, Diallo’s impeccably crafted furniture and sculptural objects have redefined the possibilities for African design with their mix of conceptual ingenuity and centuries-old craftsmanship. He is widely regarded as a pioneering and influential presence on the continent and has work in the collections of multiple museums, including the @centrepompidou @vitradesignmuseum @brooklynmuseum @madmuseum @philamuseum and @mcrmuseum among others.

It’s so nice to be in Dakar again- @biennale_de_dakar_officiel

Let’s begin with the Design section that is part of the official Biennale this year again- after it had been moved to the « Off » part of it for many years.

It’s a thrill to see extraordinary pieces by the « father » of contemporary African design, Malian designer/artist/sculptor Cheick Diallo @cheicko26 . The four works exhibited at the Biennale demonstrate his talent as an inventor of forms as well as the exacting craftsmanship the Malian artisans have reached in their making.

You can see Cheick Diallo’s work in many Institutions, including at the Brooklyn Museum @brooklynmuseum and at tje Manchester Art Gallery @mcrartgallery where 50 GOLBORNE placed some of his pieces in their Permanent Collections.

Bienvenue du Cameroun,
Où nous avons convié Cheick Diallo à piloter la première édition notre programme de workshops et de résidences RAADEC (Résidences d’artisanat d’art du design et de la création).

Des rues animées de Douala aux paysages sereins de Foumban, Cheick Diallo a puisé dans l’histoire du Cameroun et des matières disponibles, les traditions de savoir-faire et la grande volonté de la communauté créative pour proposer une collection d’une dizaine d’objets de collection qui changent le regard posé sur les potentialités d’une communauté d’artisans en quête de renouveau. La richesse de la tapisserie culturelle camerounaise et foumbanaise fournissent ainsi un cadre idéal pour notre mission d’impulser l’innovation, la créativité et d’habiliter les artisans locaux à une nouvelle forme de collaboration et de création.

MADE IN FOUMBAN, jusqu’au 26 juillet 2024 à la maison de la culture de Foumban présente le résultat de cette première édition de notre programme RAADEC.
